A friend in the states asked me - if a D-22 won't always fire the second barrel she's been told to take 1/32nd of an inch off the top long sides of the ratchet spring to turn it into roughly a wooden spatula shape instead of a rectangle. Anyone done this> Any advice, pictures or schematics that I could send her would be very welcome. Thanks.

BAD IDEA.As a Gunsmith I can tell you that whoever told your lady friend that this will work is sadly mistaken. The Davis D-22 was poorly made internally to begin with. Altering the ratchet spring will not work. Since these guns haven't been made for quite some time, replacement parts are somewhat rare but are available on a limited basis from Numrich Gun Parts Corporation e-gunparts.com

John, those Derringers are always 'iffy.' I had a Hi Standard .22 Magnum over-n-under that didn't always fire the bottom barrel either. I just got rid of it. I suggest your friend buys something else. For defensive purposes, if your friend likes tiny guns, consider the Beretta 3032 Tomcat in .32 acp. It is petite, dependable and with Silvertips or Fiocchi ammo it is a much better stopper. I wouldn't try modifying that Davis Derringer anyway since they are not exactly known for their structural integrity.

Best.

On and off I have had some of these cheap derringers. Just a weak moment on my part, I guess. The last one I had was a .32 acp and I traded it and $500 for a 1975 Ford Van. The van ran for 200,000 miles but the derringer broke about a month later. If one of these comes into my shop I have instructed my son to refuse it. Not repairable tell them. I don't want it on my conscience if the dang thing won't go off when needed badly to save a life.

Not only will this not work, but if she ever (God forbid) shot a person with that firearm, the law suit that followed would wipe her out for life. Some sleaze lawyer would announce to the jury that she had modified the firearm to make it more of a mankiller blah blah blah, and these liberal idiots that get for firearms trials would hang her out to dry.
In addition, I agree wiht the other answers, in that davis industries is a poor quality firearm to begin with.

It isn't worth the energy to smash it with a sledgehammer. Davis has always made crap guns, always will, regardless of who owns the company.
