I live in Southern Nevada and have done so for over 25 years. The reason was simple: affordable housing. When I retired in the San Francisco Bay area the prices and interest rates were atrocious! People bragged about getting a two-bedroom, one bath, three mortgage condo.
I have a large air base 15 minutes north of my home. I have 347 days of sunshine a year. No state income tax. Low property taxes. But, in less than five years I'm thinking of pulling up stakes, take the equity in the house and buy a condo in Waipahu, about five minutes from the gate at Pearl Harbor.

I was in the Royal Navy, UK, and whilst I've got no intention of moving away from the sea, I've found an area to live in with no Navy presence.
I've just spent five years seeing grey ships everywhere I've been, watchkeeping on the bridge as helmsman and as Quartermaster on the gangway and I don't want to see grey ships anymore. If I went on holiday anywhere now and I saw a British ship in the harbour of the town where I'd be staying, I'd head straight for another town.
Why? Because I know what a town full of British sailors is like. It's one big drunken party and my kidney's aren't up to the job anymore!
Wouldn't get me into a desert, though. I'm Scottish and there isn't a desert anywhere in the world where it rains enough to make me feel at home!

I retired in Charleston Sc. That's about as close to the ocean as you can get, with out a boat wrapped around you. After 10 years of that I moved inland . Got tired of the humidity and moved to Idaho! I really do like seeing mountains out the living room window and there are no hurricanes here!
