My dad loves his beer, the real stuff. None of that bud-light crap (no offense to those who like it lol) He loves Sam Adams Oktoberfest, and really dark stout beers.

Im goin up to see my parents soon and want to bring him a pack of something he'll really enjoy. What do you suggest?

If you are in the midwest, and can get Great Lakes, they have a lot of very good beers. The Edmund Fitzgerald Porter has won a large number of awards, the Christmas Ale is just starting to come out and their Octoberfest is way better then the Sam Adams, in my opinion.
Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout, Murphy's Stout, Stone Smoked Porter, Rogue Mocha Porter, New Holland Brewing The Poet Oatmeal Stout, Old Rasputin Imperial Russian Stout, Stone Imperial Russian Stout are all also very good.

Any of the Oktoberfest beers would be good, but unfortunately they're only produced seasonally and starting to run out at the stores. For a similar beer that's available all year round try Spaten Optimator from Germany. A little bit darker try Celebrator Doppelbock, also from Germany, or Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout from England, two of the greatest beers ever created.

If your dad is really into stouts, Guinness is the way to go. I would also recommend Murphy's Irish Stout as a comparison to Guinness. Both are solid brews as far as stouts go.

It has also been highly recommended that you try to find a good microbrew. That is a great suggestion. Microbrews can take more liberties with their beer, and that means you will get a product that is neither boring nor bland.

A local microbrewery here in the Bay Area (Hayward, Ca) is selling it's Pumpkin Ale nationally. I know you said dark beer, but all beer drinkers I know who have tried it, and really enjoy it. It's called Buffalo Bill's Punpkin Ale. You can get it at BevMo! in store and online.

Go to world market. They have a wall full of microwbrewed and hard to find beers. You can make your own 6 packs, they have the cardboard holders and the price really isnt too bad. They also have preboxed 12 packs of a few different selections, one I remember is microbrews across america and beers around the world. Lots of cool brews at that store.

I would go to a local micro-brewery and get a small keg of beer for your dad! Or get an assortment of beers they have made or sell. Get him at least a case or 2. Having a nice assortment of 6 pack bottles would be a great gift.

On the other end of a micro brewery get dad a starter kit to make his own beer. He could then make great beer anytime and use a small home keg and tapper. This is of course after you pick out the first keg filled with a nice October beer or the darkest stout they have!!! :)
Good luck! and make sure you sample some beer out for yourself before you buy his.

There are a lot of places that sell beer by the bottle. You could go there and get him a mixed pack (6, 12, 24). I really like Ipswich Oatmeal Stout, Deshutes Robust Porter, anything from Dogfish Head...... Check out beertown.org for tons of beer information.

You can't go wrong with Samuel Adams. If he loves Octoberfest, this is prime time, its only available certain times of year so that's a good option. If he likes stouts you have Guiness or Murphy's. Spaten also makes a good Octoberfest. Take your pick!
