My question requires a little set-up, so bear with me:

2000 yrs ago, they were saying "My God helped me slaughter the women and children of my enemies because I'm so righteous!"

1000 yrs ago, they said " Oops, that wasn't right. That genocide thing was wrong. They were ignorant, but in this modern age, I have all the answers. My God helped me get all these slaves because I'm so righteous!"

And 500 yrs ago they said "My God said to punish Copernicus for daring to say the Earth is not the center of the universe!"

Now they're saying "Oops. That terracentric thing and the slaves -- that was wrong. They were ignorant, but in this modern age, I have all the answers. God said I could condemn gay people and judge anybody who doesn't think like me and pass laws to teach my religion in public schools, because I'm so righteous...."

Anybody else see a sort of motif running through here?

Ya know, I get new information every day. Every day. This is the workings of the Living God, or as some call it, The Holy Spirit. My personal beliefs are constantly (as in every day) being pushed, challanged and at times, re-molded based upon this new information.

So, to be open to the Holy Spirit, I try to not judge and I try to assume nothing, and yet try to live with compassion and intent.

"Assume nothing" is my personal Copernican revolution.

regards and respects

Just as man has been wrong many times about what God approves and wants us to do, man is wrong once again about gay people. We know homophobia is a sin, because it leads to ridicule, harm, violence and murder against gay people. Unfortunately, many have gone to the opposite extreme and turned homophobia into an idol which contributes to the moral decay of our nation. Over time, these people will be proven wrong, just as those who attacked Copernicus and used the Bible to support slavery were wrong.

If you read the news you will find that man is still stuck on.

2000 yrs ago, they were saying "My God helped me slaughter the women and children of my enemies because I'm so righteous!"

Both Bush and Arab leaders are "there" don't you think. So don't blame it all on religion..Man has some serious flaws.

I see your point, but 1 and 2 are kind of different than 3. You still see modern variations on 1 and 2.

As for 3, that's why modern religions have stopped trying to provide explanations for physical nature, and now content themselves with being the self-appointed arbiters of morality.

When you remove parts of history and mold them into what you want to say then you are doing the same thing you accuse the Christians of doing. What's the difference?

In two hundred years time they'll say "Oops, we thought science could give us all the answers, and it couldn't."

Yes, now a group of people think they are the only way to Christ and insist on gnawing on bread and calling it His Body.
