There are many hypotheses about the function of dreams. Freud proposed that dreams protect sleep, which might be disturbed by the arousal of unacceptable wishes. Jung suggested that dreams may compensate for one-sided attitudes held in waking consciousness.Ferenczi proposed that the dream, when told, may communicate something that is not being said outright. There have also been analogies made with the cleaning-up operations of computers when they are off-line. Dreams may remove parasitic nodes and other "junk" from the mind during sleep. Dreams may also create new ideas through the generation of random thought mutations. Some of these may be rejected by the mind as useless, while others may be seen as valuable and retained. Blechner[16] calls this the theory of "Oneiric Darwinism." Dreams may also regulate mood. Hartmann says dreams may function like psychotherapy, by "making connections in a safe place" and allowing the dreamer to integrate thoughts that may be dissociated during waking life.

Some dreams have meanings. Some dreams are your brain trying to tell you things about yourself. Others are when God (or Satan) try to tell you something from the future to better (or worsen) your life. Others are just plain nonsense. The first two dreams I mentioned are called "subconscious communication" and "prophetic" dreams. It all depends on you, really. No one can really tell you what a dream means, only how you can teach yourself to learn what the dreams mean.

Another thing: People commonly say that you have dreams because your brain sorts out your thoughts while you sleep, and dreams are little scraps of information that come out of the information banks. So most dreams are either "subconscious communication" or they are gibberish. Prophetic dreams require spiritual influence.

Not all dreams, i think dreams are often a release of daily tension, sometimes, others make no sense. I do believe at times they can be personal warnings, nothing psychic about it, instinct or intuition just making it's presence known because we have not honed it or we're just to busy in our hurried lives, we tend to overlook a whole lot, nor do we hear it's nagging whisper at times for all the enviromental noise.

A dream is a story you tell yourself, about your self. I have found that my dreams relate to much of what goes on in my life, and look to them for a source of guidance and healing....

It is the link to your subconscious, so daily thought processes get worked out whilst we are sleeping. Dreams do have meaning and if you learn to listen to them then you will find most of the answers to your daily dilemas.
