There is always hope. I am a breast cancer survivor, and I am also a personal trainer who works with breast cancer patients and survivors. I see a lot. And one of my neighbors was stage IV 4 years ago and she is still alive and her prognosis is good.
If they haven't offered it to you, ask about whether or not your oncologist has a social worker on staff. When I was diagnosed they immediately sent me to see the staff counselor. I'm a real smart *ss so the first words out of my mouth were "Alrighty then. What sort of cancer have YOU had? Hmmmmmmm?" Luckily for me, he had a great sense of humor and he dished it right back.
This service is free, by the way, or at least covered by insurance. And because cancer-specific counselors see a lot of different types and stages of cancer patients, they're informed and are more qualified to help you through this than someone in general practice.
And my cancer team also brought my family in for counseling. They needed to know what I was going through, but they also needed their own turn with the therapist. They needed to express their fears and talk to someone about how this was effecting THEM. It takes a toll on everyone.
But here is my point. Your cancer team is in charge of treatment, but they should treat more than just the cancer. They need to treat your emotional situation. And your frame of mind does effect the way you respond to treatment.
My heart goes out to you. This is scary. I know 80 ways how scary this is: from personal experience and from clients and from family and friends . . . But there are coping stragegies out there and it's so very important that someone on your cancer team help you find out what will work best for the two of you.
You're both in my thoughts and prayers.

A very difficult Question. Nothing can be predicted for stage IV breast cancer patients.
The choice of initial treatment is based on many factors. For stage I, II, or III cancers, the main considerations are to adequately treat the cancer and prevent a recurrence either at the place of the original tumor (local) or elsewhere in the body (metastatic).
For stage IV cancer, the goal is to improve symptoms and prolong survival. However, in most cases, stage IV breast cancer cannot be cured.
In the given circumstances we have to continue with all possible treatments in order to prolong the survival, as CANCER IS STILL AN ENIGMA. -

My mom was diagnosed with another type of cancer 3 years ago (she's ok)..I know what you're feeling. Your mom may survive, since there are treatments available and clinical trials (new drugs being tested, which she could also be part of if doctors agree). Pray to God. And both you and your mom need to stay strong and determined to battle the disease.
Here's a prayer to Mary, Mother of God, Queen of All, Healer of Cancer, which me and my mom still read:

http://www.serfes.org/orthodox/prayersforcancer.htm
Here's info on treatment for st IV BC, from the www.cancer.gov website:
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/breast/Patient/page6#Section_265 Your mom needs to discuss her situation with her doctors!
Here's more on where to get more answers:
"For more information, U.S. residents may call the National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) Cancer Information Service toll-free at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237) Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Deaf and hard-of-hearing callers with TTY equipment may call 1-800-332-8615. The call is free and a trained Cancer Information Specialist is available to answer your questions."

It depends, everyone is different when they have an illness. You have to be more specific. What exactly are you worrying about right now. Stage 4 cancer does not tell me much.
