Creditors love having bad debt from people in the military. When they find you...and they will...they will call the military lawyers -the JAG. JAG will notify your CO and your pay will probably be garnished. They may even toss you out of the Marines, but why risk that? Does your training or specialty require a security clearance. They will do a background check to include a credit check. Call up the creditor and negotiate a settlement.

The military expects its members to live up to their financial responsibility. If the creditor gets to your commanding officer, you will be reprimanded and it will be noted in your personnel file and will adversely affect any possible promotion.

Since you're just starting, they may very well send you home.

Do something now to arrange settlement. I find it hard to believe that you didn't know you owed $2,000.
