Have any of you heard of the Epic of Gilgamesh. The Sumerian legend predates Noah’s story by at least one thousand years in the written form and at least five hundred years for the setting. It is remarkably similar(to the point of being identical) to the story in genesis.Could it be that this story in the bible was actually another copy? No,surely not....?

im not christian but i do agree with you. I think this the true source of the noah story. There are the remains of many civilisations under especially around Japan all are said to have be flooded around 11000yrs ago. which happens to be when the last iceage ended, so of course sea levels rose, in a perfectly natural way. But of course people at the time wouldn't have known this so of course they believed a god did.

I as an atheist believe in the great flood, as epic of Gilgamesh, Sumerian legends there are so many flood tales around the world that something must of happened, for it to have been copies rather than based on an event there would have to been a huge printing press.
The difference is I don't think God was the cause it is more likely to have been a comet (I suppose Christians could argue God sent the comet.)

Am I a Christian? Yes.
Have I heard of the Gilgamesh Epic? Yes.
Do I think the Bible copied the Gilgamesh Epic? I believe they probably had a common source. (For the flood story, that is.)

Christians do believe in the Great Flood. Yes, it is true that Epic of Gilgamesh is similar but you have to remember that the whole region at that time was filled with different cultures and beliefs. It is possible that they too experienced the same flood such as other cultures did and because of their own beliefs, wrote their story accordingly. But the Great Flood did happen and has been scientifically proven to have occurred. It is a real story that really did happen and with certainty it was by God's hand.

To answer you question yes, nearly all Christians believe in Noah's flood. I believe in the flood and that it covered the entire Earth. Jesus also believed in the flood which does give further evidence. Because there are so many legends of great floods it further proof of Noah's flood because you would expect such legends to come about if such a flood has really occurred. You are wrong though to say there are flood stories that predate Noah's flood. You won't find any solid evidence to back up that claim.

Honestly, I'm not convinced that the Flood and Gilgamesh have the same roots or that the Flood is a retelling of Gilgamesh. Many cultures that started near rivers have flood stories and the common theme among them is one or more floods. I would say that a river flooding in the past, especially in pre-bronze societies, creates quite an impression and easily becomes a legend.
Edit:
There is no evidence to support that a global flood has ever occurred.

Few Christians these days believe in a literal flood, and those that do are mostly over 80 years old. Very, very few intelligent adults believe in a literal flood, but many people, mostly in the USA, _say_ that they believe in a literal flood. Excessive wealth and the truth simply do not mix. Too much money drives you mad- or sad.

You missed one...DEUKALION and PYRRHA were the first king and queen of Northern Greece--the regions of Opountian Lokris, Malis, Phthiotis and the Thessalian lands. Deukalion was the son of Prometheus, the creator of mankind, while Pyrrha was the daughter of Pandora, the first woman.

Now how do you know that it predates the story of Noah? why do you people always think that it is the bible that copied the other story? I have a time-line from the beginning that is in my view accurate. Do you?

Gibbon,
Yes, I believe that Moses wrote the first five Books of the Bible for the Israelites and that GOD Inspired the writings of the Bible. HE does NOT lie and that you have been misled. Have a wonderful day and a glorious week.
