Thats how much I will be paying in childcare a year once I return to work in January.

I am thinking about maybe, instead of taking the children to a childminder and a nursery to have a nanny. However, I cant really afford to pay them much more than £12k.

Would I get a nanny for that? I would obviously want a ver y responsible nanny with tons of experience as my youngest will only be 5 months old.

You will not get a nanny with loads of experience or qualifications simply because by then they are looking for jobs that pay more. You will be lucky to get one with at least two years experience.
12,000 a year means 1,000 pds per month , or 250 pounds per week. You probably will not be able to get a live-out nanny for that little but do consider a live-in if you can spare an extra bedroom. A nanny share is also an option. If you can find another person and combine your wages then you are looking at 24,000 pds per year and you will be able to get a nanny with more experience and qualifications.
What about hours and days? Vacation time and benefits also come into play, but don't forget you also have to take out tax so that at the end of the day what your nanny takes home may be so little that it would not be worth it for her to take the job.

you may be able to employ somebody to live in and pay their expenses like food, rent and utilities and then give them the rest as their wage (200pounds a week). This is if you have the ability to house another person.

You might have to advertise privately though as someone through an agency would probably cost more than that. Always ask for references and check them thoroughly. You have to take into consideration that they may want a pay rise through the years also. Also they are entitled to time off so you would need to discuss that. I would ring around different agencies and discuss the requirements of a live in nanny so you know what you are looking at. If I was a single girl and had the oportunity to be housed and fed and got 200 pd in my pocket every week for personal use, I'd jump at the chance!

best of luck

I know. He hired every surviving writer who worked for Ernie Kovacs, Sid Ceaser, George Burns and Steve Allen What we think of as his trenchant comments on the foibles of modern life, off the wall associations, and loveable snarkery, are actually the desperate rantings of a bunch of old farts who just wanna keep their dues up to date at the Friar's Club so they can get away from their wives for a few hours. I thought Mel Brooks and Neil Simon didn't work for scale anymore, but I guess I was wrong.

If you're looking for a nanny with "tons of experience" it's very unlikely you would find one for that amount. Here is a website with some useful information - http://www.nannyjob.co.uk/pages/parents.htm :-)

yes you can but you will have to make it a live in possition, that way you could pay £200 per week if her rent was a part of the deal, £200 is quite a lot of spending money a week for anybody if all other bills are paid for, and you could go posh by giving her the job title of au-pair
