Try this..
How about you talk to him for a while and then(discretely so he doesn't feel bad) say 'Iam sorry to tell you this, but Iam doing this because I think we are friends/acquaintances and I would rather tell this to you than have someone you don't know say it to you in harsh way,I don't mean to sound rude but you are carrying and odour, and the scent is beginning to rise,I just thought you would like to know, and Iam not trying to disrespect you at all.(and then smile)

some humans have an odor problem and they shower daily!
What i would do is talk to HR and tell them.. first! ask them if you should handle it on a personal level or if they should on a professional level!
as one who needed to work on hygyen growing up i got picked on for it!
so no matter how you say it no matter how nice you are it still points out a flaw and that is never good!
but it needs to be said!~
just sit down and say hey I know this is a touchy subject and i don't know how to really bring this up but as a human i would like to build a friendship with you and i can't if i am not going to be a true friend!
do you have health issues with your body order? if so i know of someone who has and xyz worked!
no matter how you say it the other will be hurt and don't do the package on the desk and stuff that is childish and just as hurtfull but only shows that you don't want to be friends you just want me to do something to please you and why should i if you don't got the balls to speak to me in person!
some one did that to me as welll left me a Care package from no one - i just looked at it and say oh i don't like this stuff and started to give it away! (in hopes to the same person) it was spite full of me but i found out in a spitefull why and i rebelled!
as most will!

There is nothing that you can say without offending this person. My sister and I talked about and this is what we came up with. Anonymously write up a letter to this person about their body odor. Don't sign it as yourself, just as a friendly coworker. And try to keep a straight face as they read it.

Ask if you can discuss something personal but first ask what kind of day the person is having. Explain you are not trying to hurt but you are wanting to disclose this information with care. " You know sometimes after a period of time people's bodies change and they have to change soaps and deodorants. You might want to change yours. It is not working as effectual."

You don't. You go to the Human Resource department first and discuss the issue with them. Thats their job, to deal with the personnel, so you don't have to get in the middle of it. If they are any good, they will tell him tactfully without saying who came to them.

an anonymous package on his desk with a note saying: I tried this and it works great, give it a try.
It needs to be done discreetly so as not to embarrass them and they scream harassment.
