I am tired of this paradox going round and round. If god can be jealous why can't we?
"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." (Exodus 34:14)
Oh and I thought his name was Jehova or Yaweh or Brian.

I'm afraid your analogy of jealousy is incorrect.God's jealousy in this case stems from people worshiping other things, hence praise and worship he hasn't got, hence coveting.

Jealousy (or covets) is definitely a sin. If you are jealous about something that someone else has, then it's the wrong way to think because, if it was meant for you to have, then you would have it. I know that was a long sentence with many turns but, it was the only way I could get my point across. Let's say you have a girlfriend/boyfriend. You are jealous of everyone that pays them any attention even though they tell you how much they care or love you. Since jealousy is wrong, it will start to deteriorate the relationship to the point that it can't be repaired.

Jealously is resentment towards another who is threatening their position. If a woman has an affair, both men may be jealous towards the other. But the husband is entitled to feel jealous (as he is rightfully in the position of the womans sexual partner), while the other man is not (as he should not be in that position).
Thus the first mans jealousy would be right, and the second mans jealousy would be wrong.
Taking this answer into a christian perspective, only the second man's jealousy would be a sin.
edit:
again, from a christian perspective, God is entitled to everyone's worship, so he is entitled to feel jealous of anyone else who challenges his position, by being worshipped.

jealousy in all forms whether jealous of the love of a human to another god, or of the affections of a loved one to another, or of the worldy possessions of another is an emotion which is difficult to control and requires great self control. So whether felt by a so called god or by man its just the same. All (god and man) must make a real attempt to curb it. Man has the courts of law to help him not to give into this emotion-but what about god?

Here's the difference. God is jealous of our love, he doesn't want any other false god to have our love. Just like a husband is jealous of his wife or vise versa. Adultery is wrong because it betrays a sacred relationship and it betrays the deep trust of another person. It's the same way with God.
However, coveting or being jealous of what you do not own is a completely different issue. If a husband is jealous of his neighbor because he has an attractive wife, that is different than if a husband is jealous of his own wife's love.
See the difference?

God’s Jealousy. God describes himself as “a God exacting exclusive devotion.” (Exodus 20:5, Deuteronomy 4:24; 5:9; 6:15) He also says: “Jehovah, whose name is Jealous, he is a jealous God.” (Exodus 34:14)
Over what and with what kind of jealousy? Not with the envious, selfish jealousy of humans. It is a jealousy, a zeal or ardor for his holy name, concerning which he himself says: “I will show exclusive devotion for my holy name.” (Ezekial 39:25)
For his name. When one considers what God’s name stands for, the reason for his “insistence on exclusive devotion” becomes clear. (Ezekial 5:13) His name represents all that is right and righteous.
He is holy, clean, upright, loyal in the superlative degree. (Isaiah 6:3; Re 4:8; 16:5) His sovereignty is necessary to the existence of the universe, and allegiance to his sovereignty and laws is essential to the order and peace of all creation. (Proverbs 29:2; 1Corinthians 14:33) His jealousy is therefore a pure, clean jealousy and is altogether for the benefit of his creatures, as their devotion brings him—the Creator, Provider, and Giver of all good things—no profit. (Job 41:11; Psalms 145:16; Romans 11:35; James 1:17; Revelations 4:11)
But in his devotion to righteousness his heart is made glad with loving appreciation when his servants stand firm for righteousness and give exclusive devotion to him. (Proverbs 23:15, 16; 27:11)
Now that outta help you to recognize and YOU TOO can attain accurate knowledge. Pray about it and ask for wisdom and God's holy spirit to guide you so that you don't go around taunting and ridiculing God and those that love him.
You can do it.

Aside from the fact that jealousy stems from insecurity, which would seem to contradict the idea of an all-powerful god, I find it interesting that the passage you quoted implies the existence of other gods. So much for monotheism.

Remember that God's jealousy is not like ours. It's beyond my ability to verbalise it but I have found a link that explains it if you are genuinely seeking an answer.
