Repentance comes from the heart and the person turns away from whatever it is he or she is repenting of. Penance is something that does not require emotions from the heart and can be just going through the motions because they have to. You can be forced to do Penance, but Repentance comes only from the heart.
Sometimes repentance leads to voluntary penance.

Repentance is that work of God in the heart of the offending sinner that brings a genuine guilt for sin and also genuine sorrow for being a sinner against God. This guilt and sorrow brings a desire for God's forgiveness and also the determination by the forgiven sinner to turn from their sin unto the Savior.
Penance is the voluntary punishment an offending sinner, which can be without guilt, sorrow or even remorse, in doing what is required to make amends for offenses against either God or some statutory requirement of the Roman Church.
Repentance is Biblical...Penance is a man-made doctrine.

Repentance involves the mental aspect of penance. Penance is the physical act. One from the heart, one from the body. Thats how I understand it. I may be wrong however. (That will tell you how often I have been to confession)

People who repent to God do it on their own..not using a leader of a church as a middle man..they seriously pray and ask God to forgive them. Some believers of God go to churches who tell them they must repent to someone in the church the priest or minister. Each religion has their own rules or laws what repenting is and how to do it. To "repent" is to say I'm sorry and I won't do that act again that broke a trust or rule to God or to my friend.
Now if you go to some churches, temples or mosques they might say to you because you did this bad thing even though you said I'm sorry you must pay a "penance". It might be something you do physically or mentally....or something you can't do. Such as:
Walk 3 miles everyday for a week.
Stay in a room alone in the dark for 24 hours.
Drink only water and eat only bread for a week.
Wear a pink dress if you are a man...lol and sit on your front step.
Pay money to a charity like "feed the children" fund.
Anything someone feels that is right for the bad thing or crime you did.....it's like something to remind you of your wrong doings. So you learn from it and won't do it again.
I hope this helped and I'm correct...I'll know after this is posted that is for sure...
Sincerely,
Mama Jazzy Geri

Repentance is to be changed in your ways and strive to do better. Penance is to try and perform some spiritually acceptable restitution.
That is my understanding.
God bless.
