Legally you should return the ring. It is not given as a present. An enagement ring is a contractor / promise of marriage. If the engagement is broken that contract is broken then the ring is returned. Its unfair but but he would win if it went to court.

I believe that an engagement ring is given on the premise that there is a wedding that is supposed to happen and therefore it's a symbol of the couple's future journey together as man and wife. However if it is an heirloom from the bride's family, then it should be kept obviously by the woman. I believe that the man (if he purchased it) has the right to having the ring back if the engagement does not follow through. You would do the same thing with guests to a wedding, if the wedding is called off, the guests expect their gifts back. I think the woman if she's mature, she should give the ring back or at the very least offer to give it back. Anyway, why would a woman want a reminder of a painful circumstance in her life? Unless, she's a gold digger.

I think that has changed now adays. In the past I think women kept the ring. Now with law suits and such, women give back the ring. As the person said above it is viewed as part of a contract and if it is broken the ring must be returned regardless of who broke it off.
My personal opinion is if the man ended the engagement he should let her keep the ring and if she did then she should give it back. I think of it as a gift more than a contract. I would also think she would give it back if it were a family heirloom.

Legally, the ring must be returned. He (the Groom) has the right to the ring. It is seen as a broken contract in the eyes of the law.

Yes I think the ring should be given back, It symbolises a commitment to marriage which has now been broken and therefore the ring should be returned.

On TV Court Shows, the man
gets the ring back.
Why?
The marriage didn't take place,
so the man still owns the ring.
Return the ring.

If he wants it back because it is expensive then I dont think she should return. She should throw it somewhere he cant get in front of him. If not I think the girl can return it with her own will to say there's nothing anymore between us. Keeping the ring may bring thought they would like to avoid.

I believe a ring for two people to share (in this case marrige) is a symbol of committment where two people wear rings to symbolise their love for each other - the rings are brought as a committment and therefore are the two peoples to keep...if the committment is broken my answer is then no their rings are their rings, if she wants to keep it its hers wether he brought it or not...:) visa versa
