It seems to me that the True Antichrist lies within the people that claim to know who the Antichrist is. It all falls into place and makes Perfect sense. Picture this.
The world is in a time of chaos, and It needs a leader to stand up, someone to motivate and reunite the people, to bring order and prosperity.
However, in order for one to do such a thing they would need to have the attributes of the "Antichrist" therefore they would never be allowed to rise without being stopped. Because of this, The Essence, and belief Of the Antichrist, is really what tears apart humanity, Not the individual, but the ignorance to the fact that they need help, while all along they simply point fingers and fail and die.

The antichrist will be satan and he hates man. In the end he will be chained and thrown into a lake of fire.

In order to believe in an Antichrist one must first believe in a Christ . This leaves out the majority of the world ...Jews ,Muslims, Buddhist ,Taoist, Hindus, Zoroastrians,Early Egyptians , polytheists like Pagans ,Wicca and many more oh an also non religious such as Atheists who may or may not be either pantheists /naturalist ,human secularists ,existentialists and the list goes on and on sorry if I left you out.
To actually unite the world will require something more encompassing than one sect of belief. Don't be a frog in a well. Peace!

Interesting. I've been thinking about the anti-christ recently myself. In the prophecies of Malachi, it says that the final pope is to be the anti-christ, or somehow be related to the anti-christ depending on your interpretation.
It would be difficult for anyone to rise as the anti-christ, if not impossible with society's paranoia. I don't think we will fail as a world because we will not let someone lead us. There will most likely be drastic monitoring of such individual for any signs of corruption. Granted, the masses as a whole are very gullible and can believe anything, and if given enough power, may inhibit the rise of someone to lead.
Hopefully the world will never come to an event in which one particular person is needed to lead the world. The events leading up to this may be as bad as the reign of the anti-christ itself.

You've assumed that 'they would never be allowed to rise"
The book of Revelation says otherwise... the anti-christ will rise to power... and afterwards, many will realize that what they thought was peace is now a dictatorship.
I estimate Christians make up around 10% of the world's population... as such, do you really think they'd be able to stop the rise to power of one they disapprove of? Do you think the rest of the world will listen?

I & II John both refer to many anti-christs, but the one in Revelation is THE Anti-Christ (Hence his name being capitalized), meaning that it is a specific entity.
If I had to pull a guess out of my shorts, I think that it is reasonable that this person will not choose a position of leadership but be thrust into a position of leadership against their will, which will throw the rest of the world off track. I also wouldn't be suprised if it were a woman, since our male-dominated societies would not be looking for it as much.

Jesus Christ is actually the anti-Christ, in that Christianity perpetuated a false religion (as all religions inevitably are) - that of Jesus Christ.
All promises by all religions are not true.

This is just an other religion based fantasy, There is no factual base for this in any way shape or form. It is an old version of Harry Potter, nothing more nothing less.
