I'll put this out hard and fast, and since I flunked Tact Training in the US Army Military Police Corps for 20 odd years, I hope your feelings don't get bruised. 5' 5" and you weigh 198 pounds? You have to know that you are overweight don't you? If you want to join the military, you have to lose it, but I don't believe it had to be done in two month's, I believe that you waited to the last minute and now you have set the deadline, not the military. There is a height/weight requirement so that you will be able to do your job in the military, whatever it is. Remember, everyone is an infantryman first and foremost, you have to be in top shape or you will be no good in fulfilling your military mission. The Military does train you, but they don't have lots of time to do it, They have to take a "Grabasstic, clueless, spoiled brat, uncoordinated, sissy pansy assed civilian kid" and make a "highly trained, professional, motivated, skilled, soldier who is in Top Physical and Mental condition in about 12 weeks! Thats not much time, and that's why the training is so rough. They want to make sure they don't waste their time or our money trying to train someone who will wash out. You have to show them that you to have already made a commitment to the military even before you join and you do that by being physically and mentally able to start that training. If it was easy everyone would be able to do it... and everyone can't. So in short, you can't be a fat hog running around the battlefield, besides, it makes a bigger sight picture for enemy snipers and think how much bigger your foxhole would have to be not to mention all that wasted material on recruits uniforms. Lose the weight, you won't regret it and then KEEP it OFF. Good Luck!

The purpose of recruit training isn't to make people fit enough to become servicemen, it's to teach them all the skills and discipline they need to become servicemen. They will work on your fitness while you're there, but it's more for the sake of discipline than anything else.
Okay, 58 pounds, that's too much to lose in two months. Take your time with it, put on a little more weight in muscle to increase your calorie intake, then keep running until it's low enough. You'd have to be pretty old to be too old for the military, it's not something you need to join right away.
If you can pass all the fitness tests to a good standard anyway, just ask about a waiver or something from a recruiter. But if you're not physically ready for the military yet, you'd have a downright miserable time if they let you in.

The weight requirement is so that you can keep up with everyone else once your there. Its not their responsibility to get you to a healthy weight, that is yours. There responsibility is to make you physically fit in a way most civilians aren't.
I had to lose weight before I joined too, so don't feel bad, a lot of us had to. Talk to your recruiter. A lot of them will actually do training with you during the week. They'll teach you how to exercise outside of PT as well and the best diet (for rapid weigh loss, I suggest the Atkins diet. Not the healthiest, but you lose weight FAST).

Because you won't be able to finish training if you can't keep up with the rest of the group.
They do train you, but they need something better to start with than someone who is too out of shape. They can only do so much in a short amount of time.

You can't lose 58 pounds in two months in a healthy way. But you can start right now on a serious diet and exercise program. Tell your recruiter you will need more time and ask him what help is available. Good luck.

If you are serious about this you better get a nutritionist and a personal trainer real quick. And have a doctor supervise you. At the very most I could see a 20 lb. weight loss in two months, if you tried really hard.
