i agree with the others spray it ,but if at all possible do it in the garden saves a lot of hassle

why paint?
spray it lot easier you can buy the spray for it from B&Q places like that,
just put lots a news paper around the thing so not to catch anything else with over spray, make sure the windows are open and it will be dry in 30 minutes

I'd take it off the wall and paint it flat - so any drips fell through. Painting it in situ would cause them to run down it and spoil the look. Good luck - I spent hours and hours earlier this year painting garden trellis - horrid stuff!

They will varnish, but you will not get the grain effect on the surface, if the cover is mostly holes maybe it will not notice. Rubbing down in-between 3 coats will be necessary to seal the surface.

It's a real pain in the backside, spray it if you can. Other than that, don't make any other plans for a day or two.
