A kiss is just that. A kiss. There can be many things behind it but kissing someone in front of your friends doesn't mean he's going for the long haul.
What kind of environment was it in? If it was a bar, he may have just been claiming his turf. At the very least, who he's going home with that night. But, IMHO, a bar is not a good guage for where you two stand. Sexually driven mannerisms are very common in a nightclub/bar and often are nothing more than immediate passifcation. Now if you were out in a less domineering environment, say a store, the movies, or what not, then it's likely he's got a thing for you. A kiss in a public place that is removed from sexual tension means he's likely just wanting to show you that he likes you. There is less pressure in such places to show sexual dominance so his need to display such an act shows he is thinking more with his heart than his package.
Secondly, what kind of kiss was it? It seems apparent these days that full on tongue action are what most people think are signs of true love but I believe the opposite. A peck on the cheek or lips shows innocence and doesn't preclude sexual desire.
Finally, considering you aren't dating, I would hope he would not be possesive at this point though he may consider you a prospect if he's "marked" you in front of his friends. This could be a sign to them that they should let you two have your time to develop.
I would have to assume that he has some sort of interest in you if he's willing to kiss you at all. My suggestion would be to slowly press on in getting that date. If he's not mentioned it yet, he's either shy or he just moves slowly. Give him that and let things pan out as they will. If he likes you (which it sounds like it), he will come around. Some boys just need time.

What were the circumstances? I doubt he was being possessive if you haven't dated. He may have been showing off for his friends, he may have figured it was safe to do in a group setting where he could find out his reactions to you, and your reaction to him. You obviously didn't slap him or run away screaming, so he may take that as a positive sign and ask you out. Before you say "yes," you and he should reach an understanding of just what the boundaries are. After all, you didn't run off screaming, or slap him, and that might be misunderstood as encouragement to do more.

Well, obviously he was trying to tell his friends that you are easy to get..Believe me that is not appropriate to kiss a girl in front of your friends if that girl is not your girlfriend at all. He was just trying to show his friends that in just a wink of an eye he can have you.

Well it means he is letting everyone know that you two are together. Depends on the guy though. Some will do it just to brag.
