If I get an MRI scan of the thoracic part in my back, will it show any problems in the front of my body??? like any problems with my vital organs? because when i breathe in, it hurts... Xray showed nothing and MRI is next . I have a herniated disk and a pinched nerve. I feel like someone is stabbing me with a knife from the inside of my ribcages... it hurts soo much when i'm holding a pencil to do homework, I end up breaking the pencil from the pain. and this is around where ur heart is. that's where the pain is. but if it's a back problem, why does the pain appear in the front all of a sudden???? and once again... if i take an MRI of the back, will it show any probs of my vital organs if there are any??? thanks... the worried peachyberry !!!! =(

MRI of the back will focus only on the back. The organs in the front of the body (heart, lungs, etc.) will not appear at all in the images.

X-rays only show bones, but an MRI takes pictures of the soft tissues. So they an see blood vessels and nerves, etc. The nerves are like your body's telephone system with the lines sending messages from the brain and back to the brain over their "wiring" They're protected by the spinal column as they go from the brain to the lower extremities, and some nerve branches go from the spine around to the front of the body at each vertebral level. Your doctor may be looking to see what he can learn about the nerves coming from the spine and what problems they may be encountering to cause you the pain.
Can you point to specifically where the pain is? If you can, it may not be nerve pain. If it hurts to breathe, you could have a cracked/broken rib. If it's impossible to breath past a certain point, in OR out it, could be pleurisy, which is caused by points of inflammation between the layers of the lung coverings, and they hurt when they slide over each other, resulting in a really sharp pain that stops you. (Keep warm)

It stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. the place an worry-free x-ray shows a 2 dimensional photograph, the MRI will supply a three dimensional view it fairly is in a chain of moving photos so as that the section to be scanned could be considered from all angles. It additionally provides extra desirable factor interior the photos so as that smaller components which does no longer often take place on an x-ray could be considered with a definite quantity of precision. in assessment to the x-ray the MRI test isn't invasive to the physique and is almost threat free because it relies upon customarily on magnetic fields.

well i have had plenty of mri's done. and i am a certified massage therapist so i know my anatomy and back problems.
the shooting or stabbing pain is usually due to the pinch nerves.
you may get a sharp pain just by breathing, the discs are very sensitive and are easily compacted in injury and cause lack of movement causing much discomfort. so until the mri is done it is best to slowly stretch and breathe deep every morning and before bed. try not to sit for long periods of time hunched over, get up walk around and get the blood pumping in your body.

yes it should show all these things. The imaging creates a 3 dimensional model of the body where as x rays only show dense tissue and use the body as a blocking filter. MRI actually measures the transmission of light waves through your body from different angles and then mathematically constructs them to make a 3d image.

It will not show the front part unless they are told to scan that part. My friend and I firmly believe when they do an MRI they should do a full body scan and be done with it but it doesn't work that way.

Yes , in fact it can show all the organs in the thorax.
As for your pain it could be that the herniated disc consumed space in your thorax resulting in abnormal movement of the pleura or lungs.
It could also be abnormally pressing the heart which causes the pain
