I have a little toy chiuahuah shes almost 3 years old and shes been bred once, the birth went great, she had 5 and only one died at birth (another died at 21/2 months) she did so well and for her first time she did everything right. But she had her dog period for like 3 months straight and ive have a lot of people say I prolly shouldnt let her get preg again, but I wanna breed her. I dont wanna lose her incase they are right, a few said its safe enough that she did so well shed be fine too but I dont know, I am not willing to risk her life because shes my baby and im so attached to her, but having the pups around was so wonderful and ide love to do it again. any breeders, vets, professtionals w/ a professional idea or opinion that can help me out with what would be best?

Yes, I'm a veterinarian, and there are many other vets, vet techs and other professionals here, too!

First of all, 2/5 puppies shouldn't have died. That should give you a sign that she shouldn't have puppies again. It's not safe to breed her again, she is so tiny! If you breed her again after this short of time then it could kill her/puppies or have birth defects, which would lead to more shelters being filled! If you want to breed her again, make sure you wait a year and a half so her mommy parts can heal and rejuvenate for her next litter.

Make sure you have loving and reliable owners for the puppies!

If not, please get her spayed! It's the best choice, really! I suggest doing it now. You could hurt her with another litter because she is so small. 5 is a big number! For a Toy Chihuahua it's usually 2-4!

Good luck, honey and think wisely.

Shanna is right, it doesn't sound like it went as well as you think it did. Another thing (no offense here ) if you can't spell the breed you shouldn't be breeding it. It's spelled Chihuahua. And, there isn't a "toy chihuahua". The breed is a toy breed. I think you just got that confused.

It really doesn't sound like you know enough to be safely breeding her. Please consider having her spayed and then you can spend some time educating yourself on the subject if you really want to be a breeder in the future. Dogs don't have 3 month long cycles (it's called a heat cycle not a period). If she bled that long something was wrong. I understand how cute puppies are and how tempting it can be.

If you really don't want to have her spayed then please visit your vet and have her checked over real well first to make sure she is able to safely have pups. Even under the best circumstances breeding is risky (especially with small dogs). I have been breeding dogs for about 15 yrs and so far I have been very lucky not to have any complications but, I made sure I knew as much as I could before getting into it. I am always learning new things too.

I really liked the suggestions from some of the others about fostering. It's a great way to get your puppy fix and keep your girl safe. What ever you decide I wish you all the best!

Let's summarize a couple of aspects right here a million)When you requested this Q you had a interest to understand why ppl ask Qs. two)I'm certain you notion approximately it earlier than you requested it on Yahoo solutions. three)You did not ask it simply motive you desired awareness. You requested a Q motive' you desired to understand anything. Learn Something. How might the arena be if each person notion that others are asking Q(even shrewd ones) to seize awareness??? No Qs might ever be replied. Now, Ppl ask Questions 'motive they desire to be taught. Questions are the groundwork of advantage. If People did not ask questions then we might be residing within the stone a while. Curiosity can flip a sensible factor like an apple falling from a tree right into a bid headache for young adults everywhere in the globe. I believe the second factor. We must believe approximately matters earlier than we ask them and no longer simply blindly take aid from men and women with out considering it first. So, we could believe earlier than we ask questions, foolish or shrewd, and make Yahoo Answers a larger location. Curiosity can flip a sensible factor like an apple falling from a tree right into a bid headache for young adults everywhere in the globe. P.S. Ask Questions

If your dog was in heat for 3 months straight.. I would certainly not breed her again. That is not right at all. They are in heat for approx 21 days, some up to 28, but that isn't even common.. 3 months.. There is something very wrong there.. You have had her to the vet to check that out.. Are you sure she was actually in heat for 3 months?? It's possible that she has Pyometra or some other sort of infection going on there.. That is just not right at all.. I would have that checked out and have her spayed..

One puppy died at birth, let's accept that.. but for a puppy to die at 2 1/2 months?!? Just for no reason at all?? Likely immune system related, or severe defect... It doesn't look good.. If she was mine, I wouldn't risk her life and I would have her at the vet.. Well honestly, several months ago now.. But I would take her tomorrow and have her checked out. It's possible by allowing her to be in heat for 3 months straight and not doing anything, she is infertile anyhow..

No, your dog should have been spayed. You're very lucky she didn't die or become ill after the last litter. Make an appt and get it done. How did you possibly wait three months and not have her spayed? She didn't "do so well" she bled for three months. Breeding isn't an " I wanna" thing, so lets just risk the dogs health.

I agree wholeheartedly with BOTH of the first 2 answers,... gave them both a "thumbs-up"!

To have bled (or spotted blood) for 3 mths. afterwards, must have left the poor little girl weak and exhausted,.. may be a sign that all did not go as well as you thought. Besides the stress on dog of pups leaving (and dying).
Pls. have her spayed, don't risk any more problems that may arise from further breeding. It would be for selfish reasons if you do breed her for "having pups around" coz you liked it.

It is not normal for 2 out of 5 puppies to die. You make it sound like all whelpings result in at least one death, and that is not true. If 2 of the pups died and she bled for 3 months, that is a sign that things did NOT go well, like you think they did. Just because you were lucky and didn't lose your dog on the first birth does not mean it went well. Be safe and get your dog spayed. This is one area where the uneducated should not be participating in.

If you just like the idea of having puppies around the house, why not offer to become a puppy foster for your local rescue or shelter? Most places could really use a foster home for their puppies!

How long ago was she bred? She should be given 2 years between pregnancies, in my personal opinion (and should be bred only twice in her life time). It's quite a strain on a dog to give birth. I would just spay her, and provide temporary shelter to the puppies already born & in need of a loving home to socialize them.

Spay your dog- do you know how many chihuahua's we see in a week at the emergency clinic with pregnancy complications. Somtimes I get 3-4 calls a night about their chihuahua unable to deliver pups. Emergency C-section will run anywhere from $1,000.00 to $1,500.00. Are you prepared to pay that?

Red flags. She had one die at birth.. then one died at 10 weeks... then she bled for THREE months straight?!?!?!!? No, I'd say she didn't do really well the first time. I think you already know the answer to this question. Please have your little girl spayed.
If you want to have puppies around why don't you foster a litter from the shelter? You would be saving lives. I hope you think very hard about this. Good luck!
