My six year old reads the Little Critter books. THey aren't too hard or too long - just good enough for that reading level.

Amelia Badelia (very punny -- she takes everything literal)
Magic Tree House series (two kids travel through history)
June B Jones (funny adventures of kindergarten and 1st grade)
These are some of the most common for that age group. It really depends on the child. The basic rule to get a kid to read is to put books in their hands that they are interested in. That may mean only books on knights and dragons or only books on horses and dogs. Whatever the child is interested in is the best bet.

I also agree that Amelia Badelia & Junie B Jones are good ones. My kids always liked sign language books. They enjoyed learning new signs all the time. My sister in law is deaf so it was important they were able to communicate with her. I wished they had sign language mandatory in schools. I think that it would be great if everybody knew it. As we get older we lose alot of our hearing it would be nice if when we are up in our years we would be able to still communicate even though we aren't fully hearing everything. I think the younger generation will be losing there hearing early with the way they listen to there music in their cars bumping down the street. Of course I think my parents always thought my music was loud to. LOL. Oops I think I might have gotten off the book topic a bit. But yea sign language books are interesting to the children of any age.

My 6-year-old likes Cam Jansen mysteries; Meg MacIntosh Solve-it-yourself Mysteries; A-Z mysteries; Magic Treehouse; Magic Schoolbus; Owen Foote books; Junie B. Jones books; and Horrible Harry books. I think they're mostly at grade 2 or early 3 reading level.

If your child is a beginning reader, any book by Margaret Hillert is wonderful. Similar to Dick and Jane books, she uses repetition. If your child is advanced, try Frog and Toad books.
