I'm wanting the full-blown rigorous definition: 'Prophets in the Biblical sense', not 'someone who has functioned prophetically' or 'my friend's friend told me something and it came true!!!' and not 'False Prophets' etc. etc.
Do you think there are Biblical level/quality prophets in the world today? Why or Why Not?
Thanks!

No I do not think that there are prophets today. There would be no need for them. Think about what a prophet was. It was someone who basically told of the forecoming events leading to Jesus' death. Yes Jesus' disciples saw visions and prophecied what is now considered the New Testament. However, why would there need to be more prophets if all of the prophecies leading to the destruction of the world are in there? The only prophets the Bible mentions as coming later in time are the two prophets who breathe fire when the end times are coming. The rest are mentioned as false prophets of which there will be many.

Yes. Prognostication is not a prophet's main job. The "predicting the future" jazz is only to lay out the consequences of not listening to God, not to present some static view of events to come.

The genuine role of a prophet, in the Biblical sense, is to speak for God, to say what is on God's mind, which is usually something about how horribly people are treating each other. True prophets are reluctant, because they know that what they say will be unpopular, and they aren't paid for their services.

And they do exist today. Every time some jerk abuses poor, helpless or unpopular people to start a war or make a buck, there are prophets to condemn him and point out the consequences ("blowback" as the professionals call it) of continuing to do so. And like any good prophet, they are usually ignored and they are usually right. They don't always sport religious credentials but as sure as God exists, they speak for him.

The same Spirit that enabled Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel to perform the way they did, is the same Spirit that gives us the ability to understand and value scripture.

But there is a difference, isn't there? I think that's why you asked the question, there are no prophets who cause water to part, or the sun to stay still in the sky.

I think that the reason may be found in the Book of Hebrews:
1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,

His Son is to remain the focus now. And so we see less or none of the prophets of old.

Prophets, in the Biblical sense, are those who look foward to the second advent of Christ. That is the central theme of the book of Revelation, and is why the angel told John that all believers are prophets.

I think we have always had prophets but I don't know how to identify them. If I tried to name one you would probably say no. First of all how do you define the word prophet?
The dictionary says a prophet is one who utters divinely inspired revelations....one who foretells future events....
I believe God always has prophets but would we recognize one, or even believe him. If a person foretells the future we call him a fortune teller.....
Do you believe Nostradamus was a prophet? He foretold future events? I really can't think of one.
John Hagee teaches us the book of Revelation in the bible but he is interpreting what it says not foretelling an event.

1 Corinthians 13:8 says: "But whether there are [gifts of] prophesying, they will be done away with; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will be done away with" - All prophecies regarding our day that were written in the Holy Scriptures are in the process of either being fulfilled, or have yet to be fulfilled. There are no "Prophets" in the sense that you are referring to, nor is there any speaking in tongues today either. Both of these "gifts of Spirit" had their place in the first century for establishing the Christian congregation, and then ceased to be implemented after the first century. Yes there are Prophets today. Why would God speak to Prophets in the older days and not speak to Prophets today/

I am mormon so yeah we definetly believe in prophets and apostles. We beleive the church of God today is organized in the same manner as it was in Biblical times.
God always led his church and taught his people thru prophets. Why would he abandon his people now when there is more confusion about the truth than ever before?

Prophet were the men who transmitted the word and will of God to the people.

We no longer need prophets to do that.

Jesus Christ is now the only mediator between God and man. Due to the work on the cross man can now go directly to the throne of God in the name of Jesus.

Yes i do but to be honest sometimes i get really skeptical about those who are around me who says they are. Anyway, when i was younger i experienced quite a lot of prophecies coming to past in my sight. So yes i do believe they still exist, but they are a very rear breed.
