Yes, it could be, it helps in developing an open-mind, especially in kids, but it could also be harmful.

TV is nothing more then what we as a society want to see. So it is beneficial to us as a gauge to where we morally and intelectualy stand as a society.
For instance the most popular shows are reality shows and this shows a society starving for realism, but also to show that even famous people (like the osbournes) have problems that we face everyday. reality TV is followed up by Pornography (if you include cable tv) then mild porn like howard tv which combines porn, reality, common sense and humor. And then the next most watch type of TV is religious TV.
We can learn alot by what we are willing to watch.

Yes. I keep it on even if I'm not watching it. I like the noise. You can learn current events from t.v.
There are many things that aren't fit for television, the changer in convenient for that.
I don't drive, so I like to watch church on t.v.
It's beneficial to both, just so you don't become a couch potato.

Television is detrimental to society. Even if all programming were pure, television robs the mind of creativity and fosters "lazy brain" in children.

Television has limited benefit to society. TV has become the means to spread the gospel of indulgence and immorality.
We got rid of TV in our home as the messages to our family and kids was apparent- turn over your family to their evil examples.

It's as beneficial as you make it. I find that when I watch too many sitcoms or movies on tv I become sluggish and dull-minded. But if I stick with the news or some Christian shows I like, it keeps me up-to-date with the world and builds me up rather than tear me down.

Sure. I have news, History, Discovery, National Geo, etc. for brainwork. Cartoons & sitcom for fun, we need fun, cooking, DIY, music, I could go on & on. However, if you choose to only to watch Judge Judy, Springer & the likes, I'm not sure how you could benefit. That is just mindless, ok once in awhile, but not a strict diet of it.

Yes, it is beneficial when I can look on a gov't channel and see how my city council is voting or how different council committees are conducting their meetings. I am on full disability and will admit I do not get out much. It is my window on the world...

I think we have to rate something on its overal affect and I think it has ruined our society. I was born in 1950, so you can see that affects my opinion, I just think it brings so much into our homes that would never be there and it gets uglier and ulgier and lowers the standards of living, my opinoin.

NO. I have a stronge hatred for tv. Espeacially the news; they use it to cause fear in americans, fear that put us into a war purely based upon it. According to the news you should fear your teachers, the interenet, and anyone that owns a molester van. Its ridiculous. And parents are now using it to entertain their children instead of spending time with them.

Depends on what you watch. If you look for them, there are some fantastic shows on TV like Nova, Frontline, Scientific American Frontiers, etc.
But most of the crap on TV is just that: crap.
