Each local chapter of the United Way selects their own issues and charities. You'd need to visit your local United Way website, or contact them by phone or e-mail for a list of agencies your local United Way supposts.

At one time the IRS had a list of approved charities that were deductable on your income tax return. They did this for the convenience of their auditors, so that they wouldn't have to struggle with the question of whether a charity was legitimate or a scam. If you donated to something not on the list, and it was a signifcant amount, they would investigate. This list was available to the public. I do not know what the current practice is.

I do not know but be sure you pick a specific place for your money to go. United Way like a lot of other big charities has to much overhead expenses and your money might go to something you don't even believe in. Your money would be put to better use in a smaller specific group.

Each United Way has its own partner agencies. For example, Spokane County United Way has 34 partner agencies. You have to check with the local United Way to see which agencies they partner with. Also, just because an agency isn't a partner agency doesn't mean you cannot donate to them through United Way.
