What do I need to look at when looking into buying a used sub? Will a local audio shop such as cartronics be able to check them out for me? If not what do I need to look at?

if you're buying from a local shop, they should have any problem hooking it up to their test bench to show you it works. everything keazoo said is accurate as well

Push gently on the center of the subwoofer cone; it should move freely back and forth, without coming to a sudden stop or making any noise. You shouldn't feel anything scraping or dragging. If you have a multimeter available with a resistance function, measure the resistance between the + and - terminals. A 4-ohm sub should measure between 3 and 4 ohms DC resistance. If you get a much lower reading, or if there's no continuity between the terminals, then the voice coil is damaged.
