I want to redecorate a family room from the ground up. I thought I should start by picking carpet and wall colors, then buy a new sofa and accessories. Is that the best way to start? The only feature in the room that I cannot change is a brick fireplace with an oak mantle. It's very nice brick with variegated colors (putty, sand, etc.) and gray mortar. I don't know if I should go with a traditional brown leather sofa or get more creative and choose a colored leather, like a burgundy or navy blue. Thoughts?

start with carpet and any fabrics/ leather, dont forget window treatments. THEN choose paint colors. much easier to gauge off of fabric and carpet as there are virtually thousands of paint choices, but a much more limited supply of fabrics and carpets that you will find locally.
also, i would recommend going with a natural leather, not colored, unless you will be willing to change it in 5 years when the color trends change.

Your fireplace is fairly neural in color so any color you want on the walls would work. I personally like a light but warm yellow. Be careful you don't get the paint too dark, usually any paint color you pick in the store, go at least a shade lighter because they end up looking a darker on the wall. If you go with the yellow, your window treatments could be greens, browns, putty, sand, etc. prints. Or rich (what I like) with burgundy and gold with some of the sand or putty colors in the background. Then you could go with a dark burgundy leather sofa. Rich mahogany furniture. A nice focal point in the room that would show off your different colors could be a tiffany stlye lamp.

IN image is a sturdy decision for floors as for a carpet tri a low maint one now not a lot plush.. As on your paint on partitions nicely a accessory coloration (a differnt coloration splash used sparingly around the room) and brown coloration accessory which potential paint one wall with it so that is going to convey out some form of decor. right that could be a tip some hardware shops have mis-tints paints that they are able to't sell that they made for a client who did now not use it and sell at a low cost. Ask on your window section from time to time i take advantage of sheets as curtains
