my father passed away about 3 wks ago. due to his illness and the after shocks of his death i have not made it to my classes in over a month. i am failing and there is little to no hope of my pulling the grades to even just pass if i go back now. even moreso, i must have a c average always or i will b dismissed from my major. i spoke w/ a few different ppl at penn state and they say that i cannot take any kind of leave of absence or i have to pay back most of my tuition. is this true? what r my options? when i asked them they said they were unsure and would get back to me yet no one has gotten back to me. i need to resolve this matter asap.

i did speak w/ my professors at the beginning of this ordeal, and at that time i didnt expect things to escalate to this point. so it wasnt a big deal. then when things bcame so overwhelming i decided to take the time off. but the university is telling me they dont have any emergency leave for studendts or anything unless the student pays back a percentage of their tuition. to me this doesnt seem right or fair.
and to the answerer who fears of me being depressive i do not feel depressed. i just want to take some stress off of myself and i want to step back and just breath and deal w/ things before i try overloading myself and ending up breaking down. this is something traumatic i feel i have to deal w/ properly and for the school to deny me that i do not feel is right.

I agree with the person above. Most deans are helpful. I got sick with the flu during semester exams, and I ended up getting bronchitis and pneumonia as a result. I had to miss my exams, but most of my teachers were very helpful with the exception of an adjunct teacher who was not happy with my absence at all. I called the dean and got all of that straightened out.

well the person who answered first is partially correct. I went through the same thing some years ago, the only difference being is I spoke up sooner to my teachers, who have the clout to to make things happen. I would start there and see what they tell you to do. Also it sounds as if you might be suffering some depression...see a doctor on campus or wherever...knowing you're being helped will lift your spirits a little. You need to talk with someone about what you're going through and the university has resources to help you. With this in process, it will help you with your academic situation...don't hesitate any longer. Get help, it's okay to do so! good luck

Sorry for your loss. Go talk to an advisior and withdraw from classes before you destroy your grade point. Talk to a financial aid advisor about your new situation. While they may not give you back your tuition they may be able to help with future expenses. And also seek out a counselor at school that can help you deal with this stress. You have gone through a lot. The counselor can help you through this difficult time.

Definitely talk to an advisor at the school. You nay be able to get some tutoring to help catch up. Sorry to hear of your loss and I know what it is like to have the emotional shock to recover from. Now is the time to prove to yourself what you can do if you really want to have success in your life and be someone the family can be proud of. DON'T be a quitter, become a fighter for yourself and your future.

Go and visit one of the deans. Its unlikely anyone on here is going to know the answer to your question.
