Like others said, if it is a nice looking C96 Mauser, don't shoot it; it has a ton of collector value.

If it is not that good looking, threre are a few things you want to check before you attempt to fire it. Usually the mainspring is worn out on them, it may be wise to check it and replace it if needed. Inspect internal parts for cracks, age and use has taken its toll on some of these guns. And use only the correct mauser cartidge for this gun. There are others that will chamber (I won't name them for safety reasons) but these other cartridges generate too much pressure for this gun.

I would not use a Mauser pistol at all. I would keep it oiled and preserved for it's historical value in history.

If you plan on using it I encourage you to seek and expert to be sure you have the correct ammunition and the pistol is working properly. Using incorrect ammunition and/or if the pistol is damaged in any way can lead to mishaps and ruin the piece.

If you have a Broomhandle with all matching serial numbers, a good bore, and good finish, I'd have to agree with 'Barn and say not to shoot it for fear of ruining it's value.

However, if it is like one I had, i.e. a pitted bore, mis-matched serial numbers, no finish left, and chipped grips, then shoot the heck out of that rascal.

Broomhandles are a hoot to shoot. Mine was a 7.63 Mauser. What is yours? A 7.63 Bolo? A Red Nine? or a Chinese or a Spanish version?

Oh yes, shooting a broom handle is a hoot.
The others have all given you good advice so take it. But after you have shot it a few times then put it back and just listen to it appreciate into one of the best investments you ever made. I have 5 of them and I couldn't have bought stocks and bonds that would have given me the same earned appreciation value that my guns have.
But you got to shoot it just once. LOL
