America is not a Christian theocracy. Gay civil rights should not be up for debate. Now start the arguments about men marrying their dogs or siblings and pedophiles being recognized as a protected minority *rolls eyes*

For the same reason that women still aren't paid an equal wage as men, and for the same reason some blacks and Hispanics still have a hard time buying or renting in a nice neighborhood.

The civil rights struggle is by no means over.
There's nothing wrong about two consenting adults in love getting married. As a matter of fact, it's a beautiful thing that couples would love each other enough to challenge the government and the traditional view of marriage in this country.

America is not SUPPOSED to be a Christian theocracy, but it's sure hard to tell, most times.
This is what happens when people try to mix religion with civil law. And there's nothing about homosexuality in the 10 commandments, so, to quote Bugs Bunny, "What's all the hubbub, bub?"

I agree, it's ridiculous. But it is true that the Christian Right seems to wield a great deal of political power in the USA. If Canada and a number of European nations can permit gay marriage, what's wrong with the USA? For some reason, on issues of human rights, the US seems to be light years behind everyone else. I mean, God, you only recognized the rights of black americans about 40 years ago. That's just pathetic. If I were a gay American, I think I would just despair!

this is a STATE legal issue, and any person in any state can get a petition with enough signatures to put the question on an election ballot. Many states have done this and the OVERWHELMING results have been to NOT approve gay marriage. That's the voice of the people--the roots of our Democracy.

because the lawmakers were all born in 1907! Don't worry, it will change. Now how about us poor straights that are living in sin and don't want to be married but want the benefits of what legal marriage can give us? Oh, I'm sorry, and that is WHAT?

Why should gay civil rights not be up for debate? It should just be enacted without question? Isn't that kind of totalitarian? You take away the fundamental doctrine on which our country is founded. "We the people do hereby..." How do you expect civil rights to be granted without a debate?

Don't ask the question if you are unwilling to accept the answer.
The year has nothing to do with it. People do not agree with your moral stance. Be they right or wrong they are in the majpority and that's who holds the power in a republic.

I don't see marriage as a "right" it is a ceremonil comittment .
The reason heterosexual marriage is recognized is because just about everybody believes it is a positive thing. People want to sponsor it because it is universally believed that healthy heterosexual marriages are the economic and child rearing ideal and they are the norm.

Another reason it is supported is because heterosexual sex has always been NECCESSARY for the survival of the human race. The best framework for it (in large part because it produces children) is agreed to be marriage. Even the Greeks who thought being gay was superior to being straight honored heterosexual but not homsexual marriage.
They weren't Christians and they were far from homophobic.

I don't care if you have sex with men women dead chickens or you don't have sex at all. I don't care who you commit yourself to (as long as we are talking consenting adults here) I don't care who is your benficiary on your insurance who you put in your will who you let make your medical decisions or whom you live with. I will defend your right to make your own choices about how you want to live.

WHAT I WILL NOT DO is sponsor your lifestyle.
I won't allow you to be mistreated but you have to realize that not everyone agrees with you.
Just as you are free to be who you are Other people are free to believe it is silly or wrong, and given our freedom of speech you are BOTH free to express your opinions

Unfortunately for you the majority just doesn't see it your way.
There no arguments about people marrying their dogs and nothing from the Bible.

It's legal in Canada, and we haven't been overrun by demons or fallen into anarchy.

All it means is that now some people who love each other deeply can get married -- and I call that a good thing.

EDITED TO ADD: to Pastor Art... funny, but countries where gay marriage has been legalized have NOT self-destructed. Changing the definition of marriage to include same-sex unions is nothing but changing the meaning of a word. It apparently has no detrimental impact on society.

I am not american, but we don't have gay marriage in Australia, either. Unfortunately the christians still hold sway over some parts of the government, and the government is too used to bowing to their wishes. It's a terrible situation and completely and utterley unfair.

Why don`t you all, just go to a lawyer & have him to draw up papers, that will let you have power of attorney over each other-This may sound crazy , but would`nt it work? You can all get together & have your special day any way you want to.Call me a dumb ole Christian southerner, but I can see ,why you would want to be there for each other in times of crisis_why could`nt you do that to protect each other?
