i dont know, i suppose so. i suppose chocolate ice cream can make one's life bad. I think people in general can make their own lives bad through "bad" decisions. its kind of a "big" question. For one, what's "bad"? If one thinks rules and boundaries are bad, then religion probably isnt going to work out too well for them.
(on a side note; as a Christian and someone w/ a degree in history, my brain pretty much explodes everytime I see obligatory, knee jerk offerings on subjects from history which people obviously have no historical perspective on.)
(here, let me try: the 100 million+ plus slaughtered, tortured, persecuted and annihilated under the happy, level headed atheists named Stalin and Mao. thereby, dwarfing the casualties of every historical event mention in the answer's to this question, combined)

Obviously, if people put their faith in a false and potentially dangerous religious movement, it is possible for that to make their lives worse. Think of the incident with David Koresh and the compound in Waco or about Jonestown. Although these people had faith that what they were doing was simply following a true religion, it made their lives worse.

It is happening right now. That is what religion is designed to do except the people are so deceived they don't know it and unfortunately for many they are on the broad road of religion that leads to destruction. Religion is man's way to get to his god and you can easily recognize them because they all include works! works! and more works! rituals, and doing things that man has told them they have to do to get to heaven or get saved. They always add the traditions of men to the bible, take away from the bible or minus the bible. The sacrifice of Jesus is not enough for religion. Religion twists and distorts Scripture. Religion always puts the rules and word of their leaders over the Word of God.
These people know nothing about a relationship with Christ.

I believe that when people try to interpret the mind of God for others, they often will make another person's life miserable. I don't believe that is what Jesus taught us to do.
That is why it is so important for each of us to be on a "first name basis" with our Savior who came to "set the captive free". That way we can personally know the love, forgiveness and peace God has given to us.

Possible? Depends on whether or not you were the victim or the "righteous". There were so many victims who died such horrible deaths and suffered such demeaning and painful existences under the thumbs of the self-righteous, greedy and power-hungry of many religions. Christianity truly takes the brass ring on this one, though. It is truly the "Religion of Hypocrisy!"

Jesus Christ had said, "take up your own cross and follow me."
When we embark on the spiritual journey, it is not a popularity contest. There are many roads we travel where we are hated and despised for the very spirit of the Lord that rests in us.
Jesus Christ was crucified, and he had said, "the student is not greater than the master." We, his followers, endure slings and arrows of our own as we follow on the path.
It is not an easy road. Jesus Christ called it "the narrow gate."
