I want to hang a large American flag over my bed. However, I was wondering if, say, a veteran would consider this disrespectful. Is how I hang it relevant?

Oh, and spare me Who cares?'s and Don't care!'s, will you?

Okay, I hate to say it, but according to the US Flag Code, the flag should never be used for any kind of decoration. They specifically mention bedding, although that's not quite the case for you. If we got really literal, that would mean alot of July 4th decorations are bad, but I kind of see where they are coming from.

But still, alot of veterans probably wouldn't be offended at all to see a flag in your bedroom. If you really want to do it, make sure the flag does not hang down behind your headboard or pillows, but has its own space on the wall.

If you are thinking of hanging it on the ceiling, don't do it. Hang it on the wall where you will see it when you wake up. Ceilings are for tie-dyes and such.

No, I don't think that's disrespectful. The proper way to hang the flag in that situation is with the blue/star area to the left. I don't know why that's the proper way, but it is. I asked the Color Guard at the local Legion this question once when I had to include the flag in the background for a photograph.

Is your purpose in hanging the flag behind your bed to honor it or disrespect it? I'm guessing your intent is to honor it. If so, how could it be disrespectful. I think your intention is the most important thing here. I am a veteran and I wouldn't look down on it.

Going to bed looking at the flag and waking up looking at the flag. For the thousands of people who died for it, I would say that it is respectable.

Horizontal, stars to the left; vertical, stars to the right. I think a vet would be honored to see our flag hanging anywhere except maybe a restroom.

It's not disrespectful at all. If it's a sign of your love for your country, it's not disrespectful in the least.

Don't let it touch the ground.
Replace it if it gets dirty or torn.
