A friend of mine is designing bridesmaids dresses for my wedding (well, planned in the future). She was interested and I gave her the go ahead (She said she wouldn't be insulted if we decided to buy other dresses, she just likes to do this as fun and I've seen her designs and she's really good.) Now, would it cost more to have 4 dresses made or bought. What if the dresses were made out of a cheaper material (although looking really nice), would this be something to look into?

She is not a seamstress but my bf's mother could probably find one (she wants to plan everything because it's her only son and she never had the chance to plan her own wedding (it was at a courthouse))

It costs more to buy them made than going to a fabric store and buying the fabric and have someone make them.
I speak from experience, for my daughters baptism I was looking around for dresses, and the ones I liked where super expensive, my brother didn't mind (being the godfather) so he told me to get whatever I wanted, the price wasn't an issue. But I still didn't want to spend much for something she wasn't going to wear again, so I kept on looking without success, all the cheap ones where super ugly.
So, my mother went and bought this beautiful fabric, and some pearls, and made the dress. It came out BEAUTIFUL, and everyone loved it, and she looked SUPER CUTE!!
We spent probably like $50, I was happy with the dress, and it was actually more special, because grandma made it with love.
I know it's not the same type of event, but it's an example. Having someone design and create the dresses, will be much better, not only because of the price, but also because they will be made at the specification of each girl, and they will fit much, much better.

Cost of getting a dress made depends not only on cost of the material but on the elaborateness of the pattern.

Is this friend also a seamstress, or will you be finding someone else? The more difficult a pattern is, the more expensive the seamstress charges will be.

10 years ago I was in a wedding, and the bride had a seamstress make all the dresses for $110 each, but they were super-simple and, frankly, crappy. It was like wearing one of those doctor office exam gowns-- flimsy and no structure to the thing, no waist, etc... However, a dress pattern with more layers of material-- or stiffening in the bodice-- would have complicated the work involved, and upped the price...

My mother made my prom dress when I was 14, and it had 8 separate layers of material and stiffening in the bodice. a seamstress would have cost a lot, for that one.

Hi. It all depends, of course, on the cost of the material and the cost of the seamstress. I'm assuming the seamstress will charge per hour.

To be quite honest, people did this years ago....1960s and 1970s, but today, with all the discount places selling gowns, it probably is more cost effective to just buy them! You can get gowns at so many places that are reasonable. And, online is another whole world. Places like JCPenney, Target, Chadwicks are just a few with VERY reasonable bridesmaid dresses.

I would think with all the available stores to buy gowns (not strictly bridal stores) that it may be MORE to have them made....but check around!

Good luck!

it can cost more to have a dress made - BUT often times the quality of the gown is a LOT better & it should be made to fit the person from the start - NOT have to be altered - which can involve more costs.the increased cost can be due to having a lining in the gown , type of fabric - BUT this can also reduce costs
The advantage of having a gown made is that you can have a style that is invidual & made to fit. You can choose what type of fabric/colour want & are not as limited in the choice as if you bought something off the rack.

as an exercise look around the stores for something similar & check out the prices - then cost fabrics & labour to compare.

Unless you know the seamstress or see several examples of her work, I wouldn't do it. I went to see a seamstress who came very highly recommended, and when I saw the actual dresses, they looked horrible. They had a definite homemade look to them, and they would not have been cheap. Be careful- you're spending your money on something that you can't see until it's too late.

It depends on the material, it depends on what your friend is going to charge you for sewing. You can get that polyester satin at JoAnn's on sale for 1/2 off if you've got the right coupon--that will save you a bundle right there. It's the same quality, semi heavy poly satin that many gown designers use.
