The first couple of dates should be inexpensive coffee or ice cream dates...so the couple can talk and get to know each other. If nothing comes of the date, nobody feels bad because no big money has been spent.
Expensive dates come once a couple has established themselves on firm ground as actually liking each other and making progress toward a rel.

um....one question - then why do you do it?
Theres no rules on 'dating'. If you dont want to or dont like the 'dinner and a movie' thing, then DONT DO IT. Good lord, I didnt know people felt that was some sort of necessary ritual or something.
Go for coffee. Go meet at an amusement park. Go meet at a museum, a zoo, a concert, a fair, a hayride, laser tag, putt-putt, a bookstore, a park, a haunted house, a wine-tasting, Ocktoberfest, something that you know YOU like, or something you may have in common. Go bungie jumping, or snowboarding, or rock climbing if you want. THERE ARE NO RULES HERE. The idea behind a date is to get to know someone a little better anyway - so why not find out now that he hates classical music and you happen to be a classical pianist...? INTERVIEW? youve gotta be kidding...dating is supposed to be fun, not some sort of pressure-is-on-now-take-the-polygraph-test-interview! If you can't talk casually, make small talk with whoever, then why the heck did you ever agree to a date with them?
Just agree ahead of time to 'go dutch' so theres no worries about who is going to pay for what - you pay for whatever you do/order, and he pays for whatever he does/orders.
No obligation, no fuss, no mess, no drama. Just the way I like it. :)

I think dinner is a great idea and the honest way is to share the cost except if one person asked the other out, because it was their choice to go there. I think the movies is awkward for a first date because you may not like the movie but not want to disagree because you'll hurt their feelings, i much rather prefer dinner and perhaps a dance at the pub? I dont think women try to be fake though, some like me, genuinely want to pay the price!

Has anybody, ever, seen a actual greater version?)

It's truly like an interview. But one suggestion don't think about being awkward think enjoy. Your going out because you would like to enjoy each others company and at the same time get to know each other. The paying part you just got to pick the right girl and for real they will pay for you. It's not fake. There are girls out there who will pay.

I never take my dates to dinner or a movie. I take them to places like a sky observatory or a museum of some kind, art, natural history, etc or some other unusual place theyd never expect. There are a thousand things you can do. Use your imagination.
Also kite flying at the beach is fun.

Where else would you want to go? The moon?
Dates should be simple, allowing one person to know the other. These "cliche" dates are the reason people settle down. Plus, nothing wrong with watchng a movie, wrapped around the arms of your date and feeding pasta to one another at a restaurant. Its romantic.

The movie part definitely boring. Dinner and dancing is a much better choice. As far as men paying, it's a date and if they can't afford it they wouldn't ask you. My opinion on women paying is a huge "NO." If I pay for me, I take me.

Are you a "serial dater?" Maybe you need a new approach. How about an interest group situation, where you wouldn't be expected to pay and you would have a common interest. There are a lot of free events, check it out in your local paper.Everything doesn't have to evolve around food. Good luck.
