If you are referring to Reverend Leon H. Sullivan, the black Baptist minister, he was a minister until his death April 24,2001 from leukemia in Scottsdale Arizona.
He was active in many Civil Rigthts movements and was considered a Social Activist. He like many ministers of our day, used the pulpit as a medium to promote his personal interests.
You may be seeing video tapes of him preaching in which he wears religious symbols. He was indeed, religious.
