"Quicksilver" is an old term for the element mercury. Mercury is a silvery, shiny liquid metal at room temperature. It has a high surface tension, so it would shoot out between your fingers if you had it in your hands and tried to grab it tight. If you leave it in the open palm, it will remain at rest.
Meaning....the more you try to control the one you love, the sooner he or she will slip away from you.
