I am a Muslim. One of the 5 pillars of Islam is Zakat, to give 2.5% of your annual wealth to those less fortunate. I am getting my very first job so I'm wondering how much should I give it to. Its going to be at a coffee shop, so not so much. And should I give 2.5 percent of every check I give to charity of the masjid. But also, isn't Zakat like Taxes and doesn't the government automatically take tax away from your check.

What govenment takes is there. It will allow tax deduction only if you give to non-Profitable organizations and have receipt. Zakat is basically for poorest relatives or in your community for whom Allah has given their right in your wealth of better off.

2.5% zakat (poor tax) is only on savings that you have in your possession for 12 months and more. If you have $1000.00 in your saving on ist November and next year of ist November you have $2000.00, then you zakat on $1000.00 because you had that all year around. Two years later if your saving remained $2000.00 and did not increase, you owe zakat on $2000.00 but if it dropped to $1500.00 you will owe on
$1500.00 . If your income increased at the end of two years to $3000.00 you still owe akat on $2000.00 because you did have $2000.00 for full 12 months.

Now you can figure out zakat on any cash amount plus value of jewllery that you never use and keep it in safe. Jewllery your wife uses daily or even occasionally up to certain value no zakat apply to it. But if value is higher than normal, then the scholar on Zakat will have to bereferred each year.
It is safer to give more than less, so your savings are purified and you will not be penalized by God on he Day of Judgment because that day you will have nothing to pay as penalty for not paying enough. Allah may make some of your good need reduce in liu of not paying the right of poors. You might be safe if you have very little wrong doings on year account and lots of good deed. If your good deeds drop lower than bad deeds, you can be in big trouble that day. Please remember that. It is not worldly income tax on which if you cheat you can get away or if get caught you can pay extra penalty and won't be sent to prison. But not one the Day of Judement. If we fail there, we may be sent in hell fire. It will be extremely painful even if you were in there for one minute.

Wassalam, May God increase our faith in our heart and we give more than our share in the name of Allah so we pass with flying colors on the day of Judgment and are saved from hell fire by the Mercy of God.

Masha Allah Sister Sue has explained it correctly in few lines. Jazakallah o Khair.

Well the Zakat is 2.5% of the amount of money u have and havent spent for a whole year so if i have 1000$ and i havent use them or spend for a whole year i would have to pay 25$ of it as a Zakah .... Also Zakah shouldnt be just givine to charity you should give it to poor people yourself and you may give it to many ppl not just one .... May Allah Bless You
