Yesterday we were all at my cousin's house & her dog got accidentally locked in the car & died because it was about 4 million degrees in the shade (I'm in Australia) - it was accidental.....when her boyfirend arrived the dog must have jumped into the car & we didn't notice. They live on a farm so it isn't unusual to not see the dogs for hours because they go off exploring or just find a shady tree to sleep under.
Anyway, would it be a good idea to send her a card & this really cute photo frame with a dog & a girl & "Girl's Best Friend" written on it & a photo of her dog in the frame?
I want her to know that we all loved that little mutt & we're here for her if she needs to have a cry but I don't want to make her more upset.

Thanks guys...I did call her today & she seems a little better after the little service & burial they had. They planted a nice tree over him & put him on the hill where he can look out over the dam he used to love playing in.
Oh, & DP, thanks for the comment....have you never done something accidentally that you regretted? If you say you have not then you are either a LIAR or a complete SOCIOPATH who does not have capacity for regret because NOBODY IS PERFECT.
Sheesh....some people should just stay under their rock.

Oops, almost forgot....when I was on the phone to her she said that she wishes she had something that she could take with her everywhere to remind her of her little buddy.
I took this as a sign that she might like to have a picture & ended up getting her a groovy keyring photo frame & popped a pic of her & the dog at Xmas with stupid hats on (the dog got a stupid hat too). I decided to take it around instead of post & she did cry but she put it straight on her keys & hugged me so I think she liked it.
So yeah, thanks everyone who had suggestions that were CONSTRUCTIVE & EMPATHETIC rather than RUDE & STUIPID (DP).

Hi Sara M...yep....taught us all a very valuable lesson I think. As it is a farm most of us open every window & those of us with wagons/hatches/4x4s open the back up too so the car isn't baking hot when it is time to leave. Unfortunately he was the only city boy amongst us & also the only one to lock up.
We will all definately check from now on....not that it will help this poor little guy but none of our other dogs will go the same way.
Thanks everyone for the constructive answers...I wish I could choose you all as best answer. I don't really have a favourite but judging by the number of thumbs up one of you got it looks like they had the popularity vote so that's the way I will go.....

Just be an understanding friend, and give her time to greive. Perhaps wait until she's a bit less guilty before sending her the photo.

What a horrible thing to happen. Just a nightmare.
You really do have the best of intentions, obviously.
Here's what I would do; when I call to check on her (tomorrow, the following day, and again the next day) and see how she's doing, I would try to gauge how she was handling it. Is she able to look at pictures of the dog? Can she even speak or hear it's name? If she's just too traumatized (and G*d, I sure would be) then I just wouldn't be able to focus on that gift and enjoy the way I would in say, 6 months or so. And even after 6 months I would be wary.
Her dog died a horribly painful death. I would tread lightly for now. It's a lovely sentiment but at this time I would just keep calling her to tell her you were thinking of her.

so sorry to hear the bad news about your friends dog. this happened to my sisters dog a few years ago here in canada on a really hot summer day.my brotherinlaw put the malamute in the car as he was working on something outside and then forgot about her. she lived for a few days but was to dehydrated to make it and it was also on a farm. tell your friend how sorry you are but maybe wait for a week or two so the shock won't make her more upset when she reads your card and gift. be there for her and remind her that it was an unfortunate accident and if nothing else it will never happen again because all of you will be aware of the tragedy that has happened and you will always be on guard to make sure no other pets will do the same thing. you are a good and careing friend and i'm sure she will get better in time with you there for her. good luck in the future and my deepest sympathy to your friend.

Its a shame. as quickly as, some years back, i went camping out with my acquaintances and family contributors. i grew to become right into a relatively heat day and we've been given as much as bypass the interior sight river to relax off. We walked exceeded this relatively small vehicle and there have been a minimum of three canine interior, no homestead windows cracked, no water, no longer something. there grew to become into no person around/close to the vehicle nor did all and sundry declare it as quickly as we advised the managers. We contacted the police and the vendors arrived back (purely in time for the police coming) they stated they have been out identifying to purchase and purely been away some hours. They claimed the before they left they gave the canine a huge bowl of water and soaked them with the hose. We left as quickly by way of fact the police have been given there so I have no concept what occurred to the canine or the vendors. people could desire to get some experience.

I think that would be a nice gesture. I lost a pet once, and received a very nice card from our vet. It made me cry, but I was happy that someone cared enough to send a card. This was a couple years ago and I still have the card. I think you're very nice to do that for your cousin.

for me the card would be good ... but the frame ... a definite No
the frame with the saying and the picture would upset me terribly --- it would destroy me
just send the sympathy card
and in the card you could write a little saying of we are all here for you ... we grieve along with you .. you are not alone
or something to that effect
such a tragic story

Keep it simple. Let her know how sorry you are for the lost and let her know that you are available to talk if she needs to.

Well, it all depends on her, but I think that's a beautiful thoughtful thing to do.
