I'm afraid of the dark, and I've heard that some people my age might be afraid rapists and murderers, but it's just that when I'm alone in the dark, like if I'm walking up the stairs alone at night, a sudden sense of panic will come over me and I'll run as fast as I can for the nearest light switch.

Ok so I was 13 until about 18 days ago. I've never had a paranormal encounter but I have gotten pretty freaked out over my imagination or some sort of horror related media that I have encountered. I tell myself that I do not believe in the paranormal to feel better but when I am not in a frightened mood, I think that it'll be interesting if they exist. However it is scientifically proven that they don't so don't worry yourself too much. Soon you'll get over it and gain interest in something else. However if you truly feel like you'll be harmed in any way, I strongly recommend to join somesort of religion or have some religious items around you (ex. Silver cross necklace, holy water, prayer beads etc) they will bring you some mental relief. Or if you REALLy feel the need, contact an exorcist. They'll probably scam you though, so look for a genuine one. Good luck!!!

That is totally normal.I am 17 and I have the same feelings. Most of my friends or people I have talked to have experienced the same thing also. While I am walking to my room or outta the bathroom or something like that at night I get a weird sense someone is watching me. I usually will run to light until the feeling goes away..... It is nothing to worry about everyone has there little fears and for you and I the dark is just one of them. I hope I have helped :)

I did this until I was about 28....and then I had a dog who would walk up the stairs with me. I have no idea why I was afraid, but it would just come over me and I would dash to the light. Maybe its instinct? Anyway, I am older now and it has gone away, and I think that is only because I had to get over to get up to help my kids in the night.

Don't beat yourself up. For now, you need to keep a little light on for yourself.
Here are some good ideas:

1. Do something that gets your heart rate up a bit like, walking, running, biking, and swimming.

2. Eat Whole, Organic foods like: Broccoli, Cabbage, Organic Brown Rice, Spinach, Sweet Potato, Apples, and other fruits and vegetables in their Natural State.

3. Avoid eating corn, white bread, white rice, candy, sodas, chips, and anything else that you already know you shouldn’t be eating.

4. Drink clean water as your beverage of choice. Avoid Fruit drinks and fruit juices (unless YOU juice them yourself)

5. Stop smoking, drinking beer & wine, and drinking coffee.

6. Get 8 hours of sleep each night.

7. Hang out with people who want to be healthy.

8. Avoid anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Tone up the muscles:

1. Join a gym and get a trainer.

2. If you’re short on cash, start a light stretching & yoga regimen.

3. Do push-ups, and light dumbbell curls for the upper body.

4. As I said above, walk, run, swim, and or bike
5. Take an aerobics class, a yoga class, or some other fitness class.

6. Join the local YMCA..

Mental Health:

1. Get a friend to talk to each day about your feelings.

2. If you have some money or insurance, get a counselor to talk to.

3. Learn how to meditate.

4. Join a support group for the issue you’re dealing with.

5. Ask your Higher Self (or God) for guidance.

6. Start keeping a diary or journal about your feelings & thoughts.

7. Write a ‘gratitude’ list every night.

8. Do something that makes you happy each day like: listen to your favorite music, draw, paint, write, or anything creative.

9. Do something for someone else who needs help.

We are primarily animals of sight, and when we are deprived of our sight by extreme darkness it may be frightening to certain people. I am 48 years old, and I live in a city environment where it is never pitch dark. When I am at a friend's house in the country, I must keep at least a night light on; it is just TOO dark for me!

No it's not weird at all. Many people have a fear of total darkness, as do I and I'm 61. I keep many night lights burning in the house so I can see where I'm going at night.

your not alone, may people are like that, it just shows the social status that we're in, nobody is safe in their own homes because of all the burgelars, rapists and other criminals barging into peoples homes, so now no one feels safe even if they are. i think everyone is afraid, just they don't show it. i'm not saying its ok to be afraid but i think slowly you'll get over it, if not see a phycologist or a phyciatrist, they can help you.

no! there are grown-ups afraid of the dark. They are afraid of rapists and murderers too. but you should try and not let this fear consume you or it could cause real problems for you as you grow up. talk to someone about it.
