I have had swollen lymph nodes for 2 yrs. now. Just had a bad flare up where they became painful, but pain has subsided. ENT has suggested removal of the lymph node and testing. MRI showed 9 inflamed nodes, but I consistently feel one always under right side of jaw/neck. I feel pressure many times when I bend over. Dr. says no blood test or biopsy would help only removal and testing of the node. Will all the nodes carry the same result? PLEASE HELP!

Certainly this is a very concerning development for you, and while you are right to be concerned, I think it is important to realize that the reason your physician has suggested further tests is that he is not certain what the diagnosis is. Clearly though, the reason he has suggested a lymph node removal is because he hopes to rule out cancer involvement. It is difficult to say without seeing you, but from the brief info you give above, it would be reasonable to either remove the one node that has been there for years, as well as the largest of the other nodes OR for you physicina to do a neck dissection of all nodes (either on one side or both). What should determine which is done is 1) how likely your physicina feels that this is a serious disease 2) how likely he /she feels that a removal of a signal node will reveal the diagnossi 3) your preference.

To answer your question, if your physicina has recommended it, I would at least go for the removal of any palpable lymph nodes.

However there are other options. If it has not already been done, then trying to get a biopsy using a small needle in the office is possible. If this comes back showing cancer, then you know the diagnosis, and you can consider treatment options. The difficulty comes if this does NOT show cancer. The test is known to show many false negatives, so at that time, you either have to try it a number of times, or simply go for a node removal at that time.

Anyway, I would likely listen to your doctor, but if you are uncertain or would like more info, then you should not be afraid to seek a second opinion.

Regrettably, there isn't any substitute for removal and testing of one or more lymph nodes.

The fact that the lymph nodes have been present for 2 years is very concerning. It suggests the possibility of cancer or a chronic infection - both of which ought to be treated.

If you're thinking about NOT having the surgery, I'd urge you to seek a second opinion first.

Do let them take some lymph nodes. They need to look at them under a microscope to see what is going on. You don't want to let this go on. Your anxiety is already way up there.

Have one removed and see what the test results are and go from there. Get the one that bothers you most off first.
