The ultimate theater experience is with a front projector in a dark room with a screen at least 7 feet across. Also, a high quality A/V receiver with the latest Dolby and DTS decoders with hi-fidelity main speakers and good center, subwoofer (LFE speaker) and surround speakers. Also, carpeting, drapes and upholstered furniture in the room.
Of course, this can get quite expensive--I would say $10,000 minimum, but you would have a real theater experience (better, in fact, than most theaters)>

You can get cheap equipment and still get a decent tv/movie experience like for under 5K you can get and el-cheapo projector, an upconverting dvd player with home theater in the box....but if you really want the "ultimate" experience get a nice Panasonic projector (nice ones are usually 5K or more in itself), a pull down screen, a good A/V receiver capable of connecting HDMI equipment and supporting 7.1 speaker setup (Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo are good brands to look at), speakers that have good dynamic range (stay away from Bose, look at stuff like Paradigm or B&W) plus a good subwoofer for room shaking bass (at least 150 watts RMS with a frequency response going down to at least 20Hz) and last but not least an HD DVD/Blu-Ray combo player by LG or you can wait for Samsung or other manufacturers to come out with one as well....I say get the combo player since you don't have to worry about getting 2 players to get all the movies that are available on high def since both formats carry titles that are not available on the other while a few are on both HD and Blu-ray.
I know this is a lot of info but I hope this helps you in making an informed decision.

It really depends on how much you want to spend...
But if you want something serious get a plasma or LCD and
as far as the sound make sure to get a good receiver sucha s a Yamaha individually and also the speakers individually plus the cables of course. If you create a home theater system piece by piece you not only get a better sound quality, your b/f will be impressed because he would probably buy one of those home theater systems in a box with the crappy cables and weak speakers.

Without knowing your budget it is hard to make recommendations. You put together a really nice HD theater for as low as $2000 including 7:1 sound and as big a screen as you want.. The higher you go from there the better, but you'd be surprised what you can get if you shop around and do a little of it yourself.
feel free to email me if you need recommendations.
