I had a mole on my neck that started getting bigger about a year ago. Like a dork, I didn't think to get it checked right away. Recently a family member said I should really get it looked at, in case it was melanoma.

I went to a dermatologist for a biopsy. Trying to save me money (he doesn't take my insurance) he said he would just freeze it off because he's 99% sure it's a seborrheic keratosis. He freezes it, says it should fall off in two weeks.

That night I looked up keratosis and read that it's often hard to distinguish between a seborrheic keratosis and melanoma. Should I go back and have it biopsied? What would you do? Can a mole be biopsied after it's been hit with nitro?

I went to the dermatologist and he cut it off and will biopsy it for me. Results should come in Wednesday.

"A picture is worth a thousand words"

It is very hard to describe a rash, however, a quick glimpse can often make the diagnosis.

First off, a seborrheic keratosis is quite easy to identify most of the time; not often confused with a lesion that could be a melanoma. However, do you know/trust this Dermatologist?

If the lesion doesn't do as he said it would (fall off and not return) check back with him. Make sure you think of your questions about your visit before you see him.

Good luck,

Since you're having it removed, do the biopsy. Like divorce, it's expensive because it's worth it. Find an oncologist that does take your insurance. If only for your peace of mind. You waited bacause you were afraid it was cancer. Better to know. If it isn't you'll be happy to know that. If it is, you NEED to know while the cancer can still be beaten.

Keratosis simply means a condition of the skin... It's a nonspecific term. Seboroheic means preating to sweat glands...

Yes. You ought to have it biopsied to play safe. Any skin lesion on sun exposed areas should be treated in this manner.

Yes, yes and yes. ANYTIME there is ANY doubt in your mind - it means your conscience is trying to tell you something. I'm glad you got it done. Please give us the GOOD results that it is NOTHING! And since it isn't - you can tell the doctor to pay for it - since it was HIS idea! HAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, good luck with that! Good luck and God Bless!

moles are a common thing to have frozen off by a dermotologist... u should trust ur Dr. but if it worries you, just go back for a second visit.
