I'm going in this Thursday for an MRI and am thankful that it is coming up soon, because my cognitive thinking and vision seem to be getting worse everyday. For people who have been diagnosed with MS, did the MRI show that you have it, or were there other tests that needed to be done in addition?

Hello,
In my case, my MS was diagnosed with the MRI only.Sometimes MS can be hard to diagnose, so don't feel down if you need more tests.
I am 49 yr old F and lead a normal active life with few disabilities. My only issue is numbness and lack of motor skills in my left hand, Really that's great for as many years as I have had MS. I was officially dx'd about 8 yrs, but i suspected it for several years before that.
If you are dx'd..do your research on which of the disease modifying drugs best suits your symptoms and lifestyle and get on one of them..They are the best defense we have at this time.I have been on Betaseron for almost 8 years.Last week I had my yearly checkup. My Dr says I am doing remarkably well and thinks the Beta has a lot to do with it.
Get plenty of rest, eat well and exercise and most importantly, keep a positive attitude , it really will help.
Good luck with your MRI..

In my husband's case the neurologist felt that the MRI showing the spots of demylination was definitive enough to forego a spinal tap (lumbar puncture). He had involvement in the brain and spine. We feel blessed that his diagnosis was relatively quick in comparison to some of the horror stories we have heard.
Each case is different and some doctors insist on the spinal test while others rely more on symptoms and MRI to determine the diagnosis of MS.
There are some good medications out there now and my husband enjoys fairly symptom free living right now. He takes Avonex which is a weekly intra-muscular injection.
I can share more about that sometime if you like.
Blessings to you!

Daisy,
My MRI showed 'plaques' on my brain. ( scar tissue from the demylination of the protective sheath around the nerves. I then went on to have other tests such as, a lumbar puncture where they looked for bands in my spinal fluid. I had an evoked visual response too. It was a gruelling 2 months of tests until I received my diagnosis of Relapsing/remitting MS. That was 11 yrs ago. Have you been diagnosed yet? If so, how long ago?
Liz

If you live in the New York area, see if you can get some tickets to The Montel Show...he says he has M.S., and so maybe after the show, you can ask him about it.
