i recently landed a job with Ralph's (grocery store). I'm 17 and this is my first job.when i applied, i put down my hours, i would work from 6:00-10:00 PM .because i have school from 8:00-5:30.
the only problem is i realized half an hour does not give me enough time to get out from school, get to my job and change into my uniform. without risking being late. i'm meeting my manager tomorrow to go over some more paperwork and schedule my orientation. would it be really rude and irresponsible to ask if i can start at 6:30 instead of 6? if not what's the best way to tell him this? can anyone help this whole getting there and not having enough time is really stressing me out. thanks! [:

Just tell him that you think 6:30pm might be better because you're concerned that you might be late because of traffic, the commit, changing, etc.

Just say exactly what you've told us. Your manager wouldn't expect you to leave school early to make it to work. If 6:30 doesn't work for your manager, then find somewhere else. If your manager isn't willing to work with you, it's clearly a job that isn't worth your time.

It's not irresponsible to admit you made a mistake and underestimated the time it would take you to get to work. I think it would be more irresponsible to show up late every day.

Unfortunately, 6:30 to 10 might be an awkward shift and it might screw up the breaks...so you just find a new job...

Okay then approach him at a good time and ask if you could talk to him/her about your hours. Then explain you rsituation that you realized that you are not going to have enough time to change and get to work on time. And then ask him if it is okay if I could have the hours 6:30 -10:00 pm open instead of 6-10 pm. If he says no then you are kind of stuck.

Be truthful with your manager and explain that you didn't realize the time problem. Apologize for the mistake - he/she was once your age (no doubt this is your first job). Don't be stressed, but BE TRUTHFUL! Always be on time otherwise, because nothing will impress an employer over time as your promptness! Good luck and here's an {{{{Empress Hug}}}} for your first day on the job!

You can ask - explain it to him the way your have here. He doesn't have to go along with it though, but it's not rude or irresponsible at all to ask. If he needs someone who can be there 6-10, he might find someone else instead.

Just explain your school schedule that you get out at 5:30 and you do not want to be late.

You need to explain to your manager that due to your class schedule, you will not be able to start at 6:00pm. I am sure he will make an allowance and let you start at 6:30pm. If he say no, quit because he not make any allowances for you later on.

Good luck my friend.

Any real manager should have the common sense to realize you probably need more time to get to work on time. Tell him/her they will understand if not why would you want to work for someone that doesnt have any common sense in the first place? Good luck!!
