Was there something special going on then?

Romans 5:6 - "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly."

I can read that... but WHY was it the right time? "We WERE STILL powerless"? What should I understand with that? That maybe at some point we were not going to be powerless anymore (without Jesus) and not need Him?

The Romans had conquered vast stretches of the known world and set up their empire. Physical communications were therefore better than ever before and there was a time of enforced peace and order under the pax Romana. Greek had been instituted as a lingua franca, which enabled oral communication between different peoples of the world as never before. After conquest and four hundred years with no prophet of their own, the people of Israel were looking for eagerly for a Messiah, who would shake off the Roman yoke. Jesus died on a cross, as prophecied. Execution before and after the Romans would have consisted of stoning. The temple was destroyed by the Romans a few years later and this forced believers to scatter in a way which would never have occurred otherwise, in all directions, all over the known world, taking the Gospel with them to share with both Jews and Gentiles over a huge area of territory. In fact, the temple was no longer appropriate as the focus of worship, as the final sacrifice for sin had been made in the person of Jesus. The New Testament was written in Greek, a language which hearers could understand and in which many people still read it today. God's timing was perfect and what appeared to be misfortunes and inconveniences at the time one can look back and see as means to an end.

At just the right time means before the revelation of the spiritual idea and also indicates the preciseness of God's plan. We don't need more than this now. We couldn't digest it yet.

Nothing has ever been mentioned to my knowledge regarding the timing. Unless Jesus said it then we can only guess and he never did.
