I'm 17 and am not really bothered about the level of swearing someone uses in my presence, it doesn't bother me at all. Now, I've met quite a lot of people (mainly 40+) who genuinely find too much swearing offensive. Not to say they never swear, everyone does occasionally, but they seem to find someone using a swear word between every other word offensive.

So, is swearing something you sensitize to with age?

When I was in HS and college I used to swear like a sailor. But now, at age 40, I realize that when I swear - 1) I sound like an idiot who can't express myself, 2) I am teaching my child bad habits, 3) When I do use foul language it is more effective when I keep the swearing to a minimum.

When I hear folks swear now I think they must not be well educated or just plain ignorant - until I remember that I was a very well-educated swearer once....

One time a kid told another one to "shut the effing door." I mentioned that doors just don't do that.

I've always found it offensive. But since I have retired and moved away from the casino I worked in.. along with the rough language that was there ... I have gotten away from that.

The other night, we went out. I overheard a woman tell her friends "We got stuck at the effing bridge for half an hour." It seemed remarkable that a woman would say that. Highly offensive to me. She could have left that one word out, and the sentence would still have made sense.

There is no real reason to color up the language like that.

I have found using swear words offensive all my life. People who use them look lower class. There is no reason to use the words. We all have times we can use a swear word but hopefully not to the point that they are interjected everywhere in the conversation or around most social settings. We aren't perfect people. There are many other words to use in their place that are not offensive and don't show your lower class standing. If you are young and trying to make a point, you aren't showing well. Good breeding and manners speak highly of you and those words don't fit in.

I think its that swearing used to be uncommon and older peple are genuinely not used to hearing it....now its very common and most younger people are not bothered by it - I know I'm not.

it might be but swearing a lot shows a lack of maturity and a low level of intelligence...i recently met up with this guy i knew from high school, he was a really nice guy than and one of my good friends when i met him recently it was F*** this and F*** that...it makes the person seem stupid, inmature, and it looks like they have low self-esteem and just want to fit in..

I guess you get used to it after a while if you hear it enough.

You don't sensitize, you just get bored... I think...
