normal is set by your standard. if you don't want him to call you by your name...then tell him ....nicely to call you mom.

He either looks at you like 1) You are cool enough as a Mum to not mind him using your first name 2) He wants to appear mature or 3) He heard some cool kid on the telly call their Mum by their first name & wanted to be like that character.

I wouldn't think its anything to worry about =)

Enjoy your hols too!!!

Lol, its normal. He thinks he's an adult now, and thats what kids do when theyve decided that one day. When he calls you by name, don't respond to him, and when he finally calls you Mum again, answer him. He will get the picture, and this doesnt have to turn into an ugly battle (save that for other things).

I don't know what it's all that abnormal.

I remember calling my mom by her name, she got TICKED. Mine has tried it, not out of disrespect so much as to see what would happen. She even asked why others could call me by my name, and she could not.

I explained to her that she has a special name to call me, which only she can use, and which shows respect for me as her parent. I told her that I will only respond to "mom/mommy/mama," so if she wants something, she'll use the right name. She seemed satisfied with that.

I would suggest after you speak with him about what you want to happen, that you ignore him whenever he uses your proper name, until he realizes it will not get him what he wants, and stops.

I think its perfectly normal. My little brothers and I went through this stage when we were younger. We went back to calling her Mum after a while.
Even as adults we'll still call her name rather than Mum to get her attention or bug her :-)

I mean I dont think its normal but I dont see it as a horrible thing. As long as the kid isnt unnessesarily rude to you I dont think it has anything to do with how he feels towards you. I mean for all you know he heard your friends call you that and he just wants to sound more adult. I can also see where he might feel that he isnt perticularly close to you. I also dont think that punishing him is a good idea. When he calls you by your name just ask him to call you mom and sooner or later I think he will catch on.

When I was about that age my best friend called her parents Linda and John and I thought this was wierd, but it didn't bother them. Perhaps he has a friend at school that does it and he thinks it's 'cool', I'd just have a word and tell him it's not !!

Have a great holiday bex. xx

Perhaps if your friends call you Bex instead of mum then he will do the same.

I did it when I was little but it got board after a while.

It is worth nothing Bart calls his dad Homer (Simpson), does he watch the Simpson's?

It's probably because no-one else calls you 'mum'. Try and make him feel it's special for him to call you 'mum' -ANYONE can call you 'Bex'. Is he 'the man of the house' .
My brother's 2 youngest call him by his first name and my other half's youngest daughter also doesn't say 'dad'.
It's just a phase -it'll pass
enjoy your half-term holiday,both !

Well....I wouldn't be sure if it is "normal" or not....but as I have said many times before, my parents raised my brothers and me to use their first names....we did it all the way through childhood and we still call them by their first names. I know we are probably not "normal" in this respect....lol

Yes it is normal. I have 3 on my own and its a learning thing or he's curious. If he gets upset he may start calling you by your name. Try and find out if somthings wrong or if hes being silly.
