Being the highly involved, driven and thirsty for knowledge individual that I am, I have started writing letters to people that I feel I have something to contribute to, and in the process possibly benefit from. This includes authors, politicians, musicians, athletes (The Tiger Woods' of the athletic world, not the Michael Vicks'), writers, and many others. There are several things I'm unsure of though, and your help would be appreciated. I do not know if there are any special procedures or 'unwritten' guidelines I should follow when writing to them. Further more, I don't know if I should write the letters or type them. I feel that I should use my discretion, as typed letters may be misconstrued as spam/trash and ignored. I feel ignorant asking these questions, but I really don't know. Anything you have to contribute would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm aware most people have people who manage their fan mail, but still.

And, besides, some of them are not famous at all.

As far as etiquette is concerned, there's no difference between writing to someone of "high social status" and writing to anyone else. What matters is the fact that you don't know them, and are basically writing to propose business or ask for a job. Which means (a) it would help to get to know someone they know, and (b) the letters should be typed.

Bone up on your language and writing skills even if you have to re-take a class to do so. Typed letters should be letters not e-mails and you need to know the proper letter writing skills. If you did not learn that in school you will need to get some training. And yes, there is a proper presentation when writing letters, again, something you may need to get some extra training on if you haven't learned it. If you have the option for a mentor here, take it. You won't get to progress in your career without the important and often assumed tools. If you are asking this question, you don't have the tools. Find a mentor first, get some additional training second.

Whether you send typed or hand-written letters depends upon how legible your writing is. A nicely hand-written letter often makes a better impression than a typed letter, but if you type it, you will, of course, be signing it by hand and addressing it to a specific person, so it wouldn't count as spam.

Most famous people have fans, and most famous people have someone to manage their fan mail.

Nobody really cares how these letters are written...

You get a form letter reply - "thank you so much for whatever" - and that's it.

either way will work..however...it seems that you have a high idea of yourself try to keep that out of the letter just simply state how you can help them..because it makes you sound unapproachable, and egotistical..remember with some of them they blow enough hot air daily to keep the arctic warm, we don't need more of it, and besides they already have butt kissers!
