Hunny, hate to break it to you, but ALL Berner lines have cancer in them. It is unfortunate, but it is true. Anyone who tells you there is no cancer in their lines is flat out lying to you.

In order for you to find responsible and reputable Bernese breeder (no such thing as a "certified" breeder) it is best if you search for your local breed club and start attending their events. This way you can connect with other owners and breeders. You will get to meet many Berners and will be able to ask all the humans there tons of questions. You will quickly get referrals for breeders. Get into contact with a few responsible breeders, check their references, and go from there. I do wish you the best of luck. Bernese are awesome dogs.

Hi! After years and years of showing and breeding Samoyeds, I got into Bernese about 6 years ago.

I absolutely agree with most of what the other posters have said... and I'll add some info from my own perspective. Some responsible and reputable breeders are better than others. Some take more care in attempting to breed to dogs and bloodlines that live longer and some don't... some find the primary importance in breeding Berners to be winning in the ring and breed more for a big coat and head than they do for health and longevity.

Any GOOD breeder will have their dogs listed on www.bernergarde.org .. it is a database website so you can track health issues in various bloodlines. From *my* point of view.. there is no good breeding to the ONLY dog from a litter that all died at 6 from cancer. Winning is nice... but not at the expense of the dogs and the families who are losing their pets.

There are good breeders in your area (I lived in St. Paul until a year ago).. and some not so great ones. Take your time and TALK to a lot of people. There are breeders who will leave you on a waiting list 2 to 3 years without helping you find a puppy elsewhere... a GOOD breeder will refer you to other breeders who may be suitable.

Feel free to email me for more information.

I don't live in Wisconsin - but I think I can help you.
Go to the AKC website & look at their breeder classifieds - here is a link. http://www.akc.org/classified/index.cfm
You should get your puppy from someone who shows Berners. The reasons for this are:
A) MOST of the time - People who show their dogs only breed when they want a puppy to show. They then sell the other puppies in the litter because you can't keep 'em all.
B) People who show dogs do not breed them to make money - we SPEND money on our dogs. We only charge enough when selling the puppies to help recoup part of the cost of breeding & raising the litter.
C) These are going to be the healthiest representatives of the breed because our dogs are extremely valuable to us & we have all of the health screenings that are available done on our dogs.
The breeder should also be a member of their national breed club. You can go to the BMD club of America's website here: http://www.bmdca.org/
Good luck to you!

Forgot to mention - not to be mean... but what do you mean by a "certified" breeder? I've never heard of such a thing and I have been in dogs for a LONG time. If a person is "certified" to breed - then they are probably doing so to make money. In which case - they should get off their lazy buns & get a real job. Either way - steer clear of someone who says they are certified.

"Cancer free"!!! LMFAO!!!!!! Have fun finding that!!!! Maybe the stud and dam of a certain litter do not have cancer (currently) but there will be cancer in the line!!! It is a problem in Berners. Any breeder that says it isn't is a LIAR!!!

And what is a "certified" breeder????????

Clearly, you need to do a little more research beofre buying!! You haven't visited the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America site have you???!!!! Or been in touch with any of their puppy referral people have you??!!!
Good places to start!! They will give you the real story and places to start!!
