You will serve a total of 8 years. You may sere 4 active and then 4 inactive (called up if needed). Or if you do all 8 active you are cut free from it all.
The more technical your MOS (job) the longer your first contract will be.

The standard contract is usually 4 years but this also depends on MOS. The initial contracts range from 2-6 years. However the 2 year contract starts after your training while the others include your training.

Regardless of how many years you initially enlist for you are entitled to fufill a total of 8 years. The year you have left after your initial contract you are placed on what is called "inactive reserve". Meaning they can call you back at any time before those 8 years are up.

You can sign up for as little as 2 years and as many as 6 years. This is also an 8 year obligation of which when you serve a 3 year contract, you still have a 5 year obligation after the 3 year commitment. So if you get out after 3 years, you could be called back with in the 5 years after you get out.

You can't just quit at any time until your contract is fulfilled. It is contract with obligated service; you serve eight years and some will be active 2-6 on an initial contract and the rest is non-drilling "ready reserve" and you can be involuntarily called back to active duty during that period. You do not attend drills or get paid for the "ready reserve" you are just on emergency stand by.

A standard year is just that one year.

A standard military contract however, is 8 years, with a number of years on active duty, and the remainder on Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).

What that split is depends on what service and what specialty you select.

For example you could choose infantry for 2 years active duty, and have 6 years in the IRR, or 5 years in military intelligence and only 3 on IRR.

While on IRR you can be called back to active duty.
