I don't want my last name. I want to be like Seal or Cher or Madonna! Are those their legal names? Do I need to have a last name?

Those people have surnames(last names) just like everybody else. They just go by a single name professionally.

Surnames are important for identification purposes. Not everyone with the same surname is related. If your name is Hortense. How would anyone know which Hortense you are?

You might wind up getting all the other Hortense's bills.

You can change your name to absolutely anything you wish, as long as a judge will grant the change. Just file the paperwork, pay the fee, wait for it all to clear, and that's it.

Good luck!

Hey, Madonna does not have one; the Pope doesn't use his! I would say, check it out with a lawyer.
My hunch is that you do not.
