You are at the check-out. The clerk hands you your change and/or purchase, and she looks behind you or to the side of you, but not at you. No thank you, doesn't bother to even look in your direction to make sure she is handing the change or bag to you. Should I just let the stuff drop on the counter next time.

Okay, I agree that there is never a good excuse to be rude, and being rude in kind only reduces a person to the rude person's level. So I will drop the change not out of rudeness, but because I wasn't paying attention :)

That is really rude.. i believe you should call them on it every time you see it happen. Rudeness isn't even addressed anymore these days.. so if you don't address it they will continue to be rude.. if not ruder.. stand your ground Hun!

It is very rude, but typical of the cashiers at our local Price Chopper. We've actually had baggers slam things in our grocery bags. The people up there are very rude, so I usually go out of my way to shop at Big Y now, even though its more expensive.. atleast their pleasant there. Nothing worse than someone being rude at the end of a shopping day that you didnt even want to do in the first place..

I usually call them by the name on their name tag and try to engage them in some way. If they continue to be rude I will sometimes speak to a manager.
One day a young girl seemed to be having a particularly bad day. I was looking at the gum and mints and asked, "What kind do you like?" She thought I just wanted advice on good gum. She told me that one particular kind was her absolute favorite, the flavor lasts forever, etc.
I bought two packs and as I was leaving I gave her one pack and said I hope that this will turn your day around. Sometimes we all need someone to be nice to us whether or not we deserve it.
All that said - I would agree that customer service is a dying art. I hope I that when my children enter the work force, my husband and I will have reinforced good manners and character and they will be an exception to what is becoming the rule.

Oh yes I stand my ground I will not take the money until they realize I'm looking at them straight in the eyes and say something like didn't your manager teach you to say thank you to the person paying your pay check?
Once I had a guy give me my change without even turning around he simply kept leaning on the counter with his back to me and sort of flipped his hands around with the change. I just stood there when he turned around to see why I hadn't taken the money I simply said I like to chat with your manager.
I waited and told the manager what kind of person was representing her store.

It's not "ok" per se but it's customer service in 2007. If you just let the stuff drop onto the counter, it's not going to solve anything with that particular employee, it's not going to change customer service in general and will only serve to futher annoy you and, possibly, break something that you just payed good money for.
Don't let the idiots of the world force you to stoop to their level. Just give an exaggerated smile and say "you're welcome."

No, it's not and yes, you should.
Then, quietly stand smiling as she picks everything back up and innocently ask when the store will be getting customer operated check-outs.
I don't know why but this behavior is so common at grocers. I have had jobs where I stood all day and I never forgot to be courteous, cheerful and kind - to everyone. It is part of the job.

While this isn't polite, for you to drop stuff to draw attention to it, would be just as impolite. You could just smile, say thank-you and go on your way. Who knows, that might lighten the clerk's day enough that they are then a bit happier, and more polite to the next customer. My mother said the mark of good manners was to treat people politely, regardless of how you are treated.

No, it's not okay behavior. Next time I would just rudely say, "You're welcome." That'll get their attention. If I'm spending my money and someone is not giving good service (whether it be the check out clerk, waitress, etc.) I have no problem being rude.

its just called bad customer service. if they keep doing it, just talk to their manager if it really bothers you. its kind of going against societal norms, but theres really not much you can do about it.. i always find a way to get them back, like say "thanks, have a nice day" or something like that. i'm a clerk myself and if the person doesn't give me the money to my hand, i'll usually do the same thing back. its childish, but usually gets the point across

The person at the checkout has many responsibilities within the store, maybe something else was going on that you were unaware of? Just because someone else is being rude is no excuse to stoop down to their level.
